Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A friend has just had his computer locked with this nasty ransomware which locks your computer and demands money. Clearly you shouldn't pay and should inform the police who are attempting to look into this. His laptop is very old so he is happy to replace it anyway but there is some conflicting info on the web. Updated anti malware and anti virus software is recommended but doesn't really seem bullet proof. Also some say that you can just burn a copy of a prog and run it in the drive to remove it; others say it is a big job and the whole hard drive needs to be deleted. Any tips as I am now nervous?

Not my problem! I have Malwarebytes and since it doesn't auto update I would strongly recommend people do this regularly. I booted up a spare pc recently, updated malwarebytes and it found thousands of items! However it didn't remove them, just kept spinning, so I deleted Malwarebytes and reinstalled it. A completely new program, so just updating isn't enough. I also have Avast and CCleaner but I wondered if this was enough...
