Hi Tina,

We send our son to Dyslexia action. They are based in the RNIB building on Judd Street. Give them a call on 0207 391 2030. They will do units of sound, spelling strategies, mind maps and well as learning to structure writing with your child. 

Our son made a massive leap in his ability to access his education due to them. I can't recommend them highly enough. I'm actually going there myself this morning for a Parents awareness course.

Hi Tina

What is it specifically that your son is struggling with? I have dyslexia and I found that very few of my tutors were able to help, it was more important for me to develop my understanding the different methods of learning. Visual literacy is a great tool for dyslexics. When I got to university I had a learning disability advisor which was the most helpful and life changing thing.

Hi Sam. He has short term memory which means he struggles in English and maths in class also he can only solve visual problems . The school are being great and giving him extra help through senco but we struggle at home with home work as I have no idea how to help him and he gets very short tempered with me when I try to help in a way he would never at school. I just want to do anything I can to help him and learn as my 5 yr old has been picked up as having exactly the same learning problems now.
To make matters worse after 40 yrs I have realised I am the same but didn't realise I just thought I never paid attention but the way they describe their learning difficulties I realise it is the same with me so I can't understand the things they can't understand so I'm no help at all. I do however remain very positive and we are largely a very happy family and getting ahead in education was never my priority but the school are worried and I feel I am holding them back if I am not taking it seriously . Well I think you are doing amazingly! Don't be discouraged, it is difficult but I think once you find the right methods you will be amazed at your son's ability.

Has your son tried writing on different coloured paper? A lot of dyslexics have colour sensitivity and the glaring black (or navy blue) on white is a real struggle. I found that writing on pastel blue coloured paper so good for helping me remember written information. I also have a piece of transparent blue material that I put over books while I read them and my computer screen has a blue screen over it. Try buying a selection of different coloured transparent materials and placing them over text and asking your son which he finds the easier to read, mine was blue, but it could be any colour.

Another vote for Dyslexia Action here. As a first port of call, try their free after-school club - they also have small group tuition sessions and one-to-one tuition.
