Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Houses converted to bedsits without planning permission.

Hi everyone.

I am new here.  I wondered if anyone could help me.

I am fed up with houses illegally converted into bedsits without planning permission.

  • Me

    Haringey Council doing nothing about it!  Instead pay for the rent of the tenants and r grant certificate of lawfulness and grant planning permission for more bedsits to be built.

  • One of the bedsits is also a brothel.  My neighbours have had death threats because of reporting anti social behaviour to the police. 
  • The bedsits are disgusting and dirty.  Mice and cockcroaches everywhere.
  • Rubbish everywhere.
  • I live in a semi and now garages attached to the house next door has been granted planning permission to build a 1 bed flat, 2 storey extension.  This property is called an extension, but is a separate dwelling and separate entrance.  Can this be called an extension?
  • Can anyone help me???  I need help quick.  I have 1 week left to take this to Court

Hi Abster

This is exactly what I was thinking.  The owner of the property next door has already converted the house next door to 4 bedsits without planning permission.

There is this who ha about people sheds, etc converted to this houses and this is no difference, the only difference is Haringey have granted planning permission. Disgusting.

Can anyone please confirm?

How do I find out if or not the planning "extension" is actually legal - permitted development" - under the current legislation?

Hi Jamie, have you written asking Haringey's Planning Service?

If not, as I suggested, please contact your ward councillor Toni Mallett and ask her to help you.

Toni is a long-serving experienced councillor who works hard in her ward. If she thinks the information which the Planning Service, the CAB - or whoever else you and your neighbours have contacted - is unclear, I would trust her to try to get clearer advice.

If you can't reach her mobile, email her and give her your own phone number.

So what happened? You bought a flat that had been illegally converted? Solicitor didn't spot that...?

Hi John

No my parents have a semi detached house.  The house next door was sold a number of years ago and converted the house to bedsits without planning permission and was granted a certificate of lawfulness.  The house only has one entrance and one gas meter so concealed.  There are two garages (size of a car) that the scum landlady has applied planning permission to build a 2 storey 1 bed house has been granted planning permission to build although planning permission 4 times before and refused (4th time by The Planning Inspectorate), the reasons for refusal still stand.  How can this be?  The space is way to small for a house in any case.  They are calling this a 2 storey side extension, but this separate dwelling has its own entrance.

There are quite a few properties on this road that have been converted to bedsits without planning permission.  They all have one door way so not noticeable.  Bins are all open and overflowing.  Disgusting.

Oh yeah, he's actually rubbish at that (or maybe it's the people in his office). I thought he'd gotten better recently. Try one more time and CC the local councillors.

Hi John

I sent my email to all the councillors in Haringey and two MPs (David Lammy and Lynne Featherstone.  They are looking into it apparently, but I think only the anti social behaviour issue (I will be lucky if they only look into one point).  I doubt Haringey will look into it, but I will give them a chance.  I have been asked to give them a few days.  Aghhhhh.. I have been waiting years.
