Insofar as they involve the criminal law, yes.
But Therese, the eyewitness said " ...the elderly man who started to cross the road after the flashing amber lights had turned green..... "
I agree Therese. Arguing about it won't help the victim or the driver. Best to wait for the report of the inquest or court case, if it comes to that.
Someone on Twitter said there has been a fatality.
Looks horrible and must be serious. I went into town on a bus at 11.30ish this morning on the 341 from Chestnuts park and we were diverted down St Anne's Rd onto Seven Sisters. We came back at 3pm and the bus was still on diversion.
Latest news is that a 78 year old man was hit by a lorry. He was taken to hospital in an air ambulance and is in critical condition.
If it hadn't been for the fact that I was driving deliveries and was on a timed schedule . . . .,
Alan, with great respect (and I do mean that, in view of your detailed observation and the fact that you later reported what you saw) what sort of firm do you drive for and what sort of timed regime are you under that takes precedence over reporting to the police who were on the scene within minutes?
Other point: I'm pretty sure pedestrians (of whatever age) get a damned poor deal on those Pelicon (pardon my pedantic spelling) crossings. How many seconds flashing? Will our wonderful Green Lanes regeneration include a longer period for pedestrians to complete their crossing? When will we get a countdown system?
(Not suggesting that this was the problem at Friday's accident. Even OAE will admit that 78-year olds, much like 70-year olds, can occasionally be a law unto themselves.)
OAE, our company vehicles are tracked and the bosses would not take kindly to 2 hours' work time spent reporting details of an accident (unless my vehicle was involved). which has in any case now been done. My statement proved of great interest to the police and will hear from them in due course regarding the matter. I still don't know the welfare of the pedestrian - have heard nothing since Friday, and the police will not comment on it.
Sadly the injured man must have died. On Tuesday night a small group of people fastened bouquets of flowers and a candle to the signals at the zebra crossing where he was run over.
Let's hope the family of the elderly man is not reading this thread - while helpful last week to be made aware of the accident and therefore avoid the area if driving and needing to get somewhere quickly - I have to say the continuation of the article makes me very sad and cross. Is there no respect. And don't get me started on the picture.
