Are You Entitled to Register to Vote in the May Local Elections?
With our gloriously varied population in Harringay, a pub conversation the other day made me realise that some people who are entitled to vote ay not realise it. For local elections, here's what the electoral commission says:
All British, European Union and qualifying Commonwealth citizens meet the nationality requirement to vote in local government elections, and so are entitled to be included in the local government register of electors assuming that all of the other registration criteria are also met. The local government election franchise is also used for elections to the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales and the Greater London Authority.
The other registration criteria are pretty much that you live at the address you want to register for. Here's the full monty.
(For national elections you're probably eligible as a Commonwealth citizen too).
The cut-off date to register for the May elections is May 6th.

Thanks for the cut-off date information, Hugh. I should have known it, but didn't. Have you and Liz yet decided how HoL will assist the democratic process? Will candidates get the chance to be on video again?

This is indeed a cut-off date, ugh. May we assume May 6th ?

Election Commission estimates that ~20% of eligible voters are not registered.
Of those registered only 30-40% turnout to vote in local elections.
So there could be a role for HoL and HoLlers to encourage registration and turnout without endorsing any parties or candidates if that is what you prefer!

I'm in complete agreement, Narendra.
And I think it's worth registering even if - on election day - you find there's nobody standing in your ward to whom you'd give the steam from your piss - let alone your vote. Don't stay away from the polling station. Instead express your deep disgust by printing the immortal words of Leo Tolstoy in large letters across the ballot paper.
