Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Earlier today I came across a German TV crew from ZDF (their national broadcaster) filming near the mosque, on Wightman Rd.

They were in London to make a feature for a literary programme called Das Blaue Sofa about New Zealand born novelist, playwright and filmmaker Anthony McCarten, whose new book Funny Girl is set in Harringay. They interviewed Anthony yesterday in Mezzo, and the film will be on their website in mid February.

The story is about a Kurdish girl who becomes the world's first Muslim female stand up comedienne.

The book is being published in Germany at the end of February, but as of yet there is no UK publisher, which is a big shame. I contacted McCarten's current UK publisher, Alma Books and they said he is really big in Germany and the German publisher (Diognes) were hoping for one of the big publishers over here to take it on, but none have as yet.

Here is the translation of the blurb from the German publisher, using google translate, I'm sure someone can come up with a better translation!!

"Young Londoner to their Kurdish parents : "I have good news and bad news. The bad : I'll stand-up comedian. The good : I wear the burqa as of today - but only on the stage , " A highly explosive multicultural society comedy, so touching and gripping.

The shy Azime , 20, from Kurdish family grew up in London. East and West, Islam and secularism , Burka and midriff - in Azimes both worlds , there are clear rules on how it has to be and what they may . Between the Worlds crunches huge. Kurdish your school girlfriend falls in love and is mysteriously killed. Azime begins to investigate. However, when soon after the terrorist attacks in the subway require hundreds of victims , she knows that she has to raise her voice . Secretly in her own way she attended a comedy course , slips into a burqa and occurs : as the world's first Muslim female comedian . The appearance is like explosives. Her family contrary , the British press celebrates a sensation on the internet it hails death threats. It is serious. And yet always funny . And very different than you think now."

Wolfgang Herles, 3rd right, is famous in Germany for his 1991 spat with Helmut Kohl. Which he lost, when Kohl manged to get him removed from his contract.

A slight correction, ZDF is Germany's second national channel, not a network, the channel is broadcast throughout Germany, with no regional variations or affiliates, using a number of signal repeaters. ZDF transmitters broadcast a digital signal. Analog signals were gradually phased out, a process which lasted from 2002 to 2008. The ZDF group includes the main ZDF channel itself, 3sat, ZDFinfokanal (a topical information and news channel), KIKA (a children´s channel; daytime only), ZDFkultur (culture-oriented), ZDFneo (youth-oriented) and arte.

ARD, National channel no.1 is a regional Network producing local programmes, often in local dialects or minority languages, i.e. Bavarian, Frisian German, Danish and Sorbian.

Licences fee in Germany for Radio, TV and New Media have been € 17,98 per month since January 2009. These fees are not collected directly by ZDF but by the GEZ which is a common organisation of ARD, its members, ZDF and Deutschlandfunk. Every resident in Germany with a radio, TV or other relevant device (such as a computer or mobile phone with internet access) is obliged to pay this licence fee.
