Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi everyone

We were given this today. Does anyone know what it is used for? The hole in the side is cork sized.

Is that a hole in the bottom?

Could be wrong, but I think it may be a hot water bottle/ bed warmer.  I remember them from my grandma's house in East Ham in the 70s.  My dad has a great story about dreaming a bomb was falling on the house and waking up in terror to what he thought was the bomb hitting, but was actually the sound of the hot water bottle hitting the floor.

It's called a wine bottle

Ha ha James :)

Scratch that, hadn't looked at the second pic showing lid before speculating.

Here are some pics of the hot water bottles I was talking about:

Another speculation: A high flush toilet tank?

Interesting speculation, David. And I like the story about your Dad.
Thanks for the suggestion, TBD

The mystery continues.

I asked Deborah Hedgcock, curator at Bruce Castle Museum, if she had any ideas. She too was stumped and put me on to Maurice Collins, the Gadget Man collector of Haringey, who she thought could hazard a guess.

I heard from Maurice briefly today. He wrote, "I'm not sure, Hugh but I will try to find out. It could be a disinfectant flush for a toilet".

Brilliant, thanks Hugh.  Hopefully Maurice will be able to solve the mystery.
