Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Desperate at having lost Flame, we gave a second chance to SELALE and we have been very happy.

First time we went, we definitely found the food excellent and many important Green Lane people were there too... The second time, we also met our excellent Dentist, who practises close by and who swears by the place. He seems to hang around there a lot between two fillings (only joking...). I went on my own a third time to buy some take away : I was superbly well treated by the cook who also offered me a tea while waiting and topped up my order with a rice pudding ! We went again to-day and the food was excellent, with good service. I will be going again Sunday lunchtime with a friend.

So over 3 weeks, we have not once be disappointed. The quality of the food is on par with Flame. Regarding the decor, they have got rid of the harsh blue light and replaced it with purple/pinkish. They only have on thing to work on, and the boss told me that it will be done, the refurbishment of the toilets facilities.

So if you are a Flame nostalgic, SELALE is a good replacement.

The food is good but the lighting is just so god damn awful. Are there any kebab shops on green lanes with tasteful lighting? I'm yet to find one.

Durazzo's lighting is okay - tasteful and no harsh at any rate., I don't mind Selale's lighting actually.

Isn't durazzo a pizza place?
It is. Must have missed that kebab qualifier first time round

I really do not get why they insist on such bright, intrusive lighting in these places.

We too badly miss Flame but tried and liked Hanci; I'd recommend them.

Do they have decent fish at Selale?  That's what my 3 yr old daughter and I miss most from Flame (she keeps asking where/why the fish restaurant has gone).  I really liked that you could see the whole fish and choose one before they cooked it.

BTW - I bumped into a waitress from Flame, now working at Hala.  She said that custom dropped off when they moved the kitchen to the back.  I guess the punters don't trust an okabashi if they can't see a charcoal grill.

My friend's parents come across from Walthamstow just for the salmon - it's absolutely beautiful - really, really good.

I noticed that Hanci do a good selection of fish. So, I had a conversation with owner Ekim during which I learned that he gets fresh fish in every couple of days - and he made us all an offer of a 15% discount on fish and all eat-in meals - See here for more.

Now if ALL the kebab shops could reduce their lighting by 15% I might eat out more often

Do any of the other restaurants have Flame's lamb soup though...?

It's also worth checking out Flame's replacement. Currently only doing (all you can eat) buffet.  They have some great cold mezze - much lighter than anything I've had elsewhere on Green Lanes.  Some of them remind me of food I've had in Istanbul.
