Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was sitting in the kitchen with a friend today when I thought I heard my son's key in the front door lock, but no-one came in. When I tried to let my friend out, the chubb lock was locked (with no key in it), which I never do while in the house. It was very strange, and I got the impression that someone had acquired a set of keys (my son has mislaid several this year) and was trying to get in, but heard that we were there and then for some reason turned the key in the lock.

Anyway, as a result I've gone ahead and changed all my locks  - not too expensive as it turned out, and worth it for peace of mind.

If it was a yale-type lock, you can buy special keys on the interwebs that are shaped to knock round the tumblers of the lock, with a jerking move. I'm not naming them as that would be encouraging them, but I am just slightly surprised that they are on open sale. So this could have been an attempt to use one of those.  Meanwhile, anything less than a mortice lock will not stop a thief with this special key, or sometimes with just a plastic card. A jemmy will split most wooden doors around the lock. Just sayin'.

I have a yale, two chubbs, a London bar and a burglar alarm...was burgled a few years ago (brick through window) and it was horrid.

This on Twitter today:

siobhantuck@harringayonline please warn your followers-huge spike in burglaries over the last two days during day etc. take extra care.

How right you are!  Take care means having good locks (not just yale type) they can help stop a break in through the door and also stops the burglar leaving through the front door!  Think about window locks, have lamps on timers coming on at different times so it looks like someone's home, lock up ladders in the garden and don't leave any tools out, and don't display your hard earned goods in the window.  This is rich pickings time for burglars as we all have a few Christmas presents in the house which they want!  Finally, think about a burglar alarm - ours also has facility for front door to chime when it is opened each time - handy to know!

yeah there was another attempted burglary just a few doors down from me in warham too, be alert!
