Many cyclists and runners use a clever app called Strava where you can time yourself on 'segments' and compare your times to what your friends have done.
A runner on Strava has set up a segment which encompasses all 19 Ladder Roads and Turnpike Lane

The distance is 9.3km and the record is 45mins

David and I have exchanged e-mails and are coming up with a plan. The more, the merrier, so if anyone else wants to get involved with the organisation, please e-mail David as per his post. 9 March might possibly be too soon, partly because of organisation and partly because anyone doing a spring marathon will be past the 10km point in their training (by quite some way) just then and will likely want to be doing a much longer run at that point (and we'd be competing with the myriad other runs that are there specifically for the purpose of marathon training at that specific time of year). I know that's only one section of the running community, but we don't want to cut loads of people out right at the start!
We don't know yet - we need to do a bit of research as to what else is on when. There's no point in doing it on the same day as, for example, the Race for Life happens in Finsbury Park, or someone has already booked a road closure for a Play Street or a demonstration or whatever - not all of those things have such a long lead time on them, but other running events are often put in the calendar a year in advance. I think probably fairly shortly after Easter is likely, but we'll need to figure out what else is already on.
I guess early April could work, but it would be starting to lose the just doing it for a new years get fit resolution type thing.
What sort of thing are you thinking off - something aimed at "proper" runners, or more of a fun community event? My guess is that there aren't that many Harringay people training for a full on marathon whereas there probably are enough who could be persuaded to take part in more of a fun community run. And it would be more likely to get the community groups like GRA and FOFP etc involved if it was more of a community fun thing.
A bit of both, Ant. Plenty of organised runs are suited to serious runners and "fun" runners (and even walkers at some) so I don't see why this should be any different. In my experience, even at community fun runs you get some people who take it very seriously and want to win or get a PB or something, so there's no reason we shouldn't cater for all.
I used to do a 5K run up and down the Ladder roads when I lived on Seymour. It's pretty good, you just got to make sure to avoid the dogshit in the Passage. And build in extra exercise by jumping over fly-tips perhaps? The steeper ladder roads are TOUGH, I'm telling 'ya!
I've been in touch with the Borough's highways department and am expecting to hear back from them on Monday. I'll of course keep everyone posted.
Brilliant - thanks so much for doing this David - it could be brilliant! I'll pm you with my email and happy to do a bit to help if I can. In my opinion it's definitely very important to have a strong fun and community element, and also for children to be involved if possible. I'm sure serious runners will join but I guess no one's every going to get a personal best going round all those corners!
Could I encourage all potential Hurtlers in need of training to get themselves down to finsbury park at 9am on Saturdays for the parkrun 5k? It's free, it's timed, you get all your stats online afterwards... what's not to like? You just need to register and print your barcode first if you want your time recorded.
Damn, that's quick, great effort! Practically the same pace as my PB at Finsbury Parkrun this morning, but double the distance and a lot hillier.
Did you think the distance was further than 9.3km? I noticed the original was done on an iphone and it cuts most of the corners off. Your garmin one is much more accurate.
Congratulations on the CR, but I hope you feel at least slightly guilty that the time you beat was at the start of a 30k loop. :)
I've just had a helpful response from one of the officials in the Council's highways department. He'll be getting on to Transport for London, and then we'll speak again later in the week.
A very good team is forming to make this all happen, and as soon as I've learned a bit more, I hope we'll be getting together.
Any more update or thoughts on doing the run?
I've heard it may be prohibitively expensive to close Green Lanes, but i don't think its really necessary if the route sticks mostly to the Ladder and Gardens. And i still like an early March date...
Anyone else?
