Hi local folks,

It's just over a year since the successful cash mob at Michli's grocers on St Ann's Road / Salisbury road. Andreas and Hulya are still going strong - still providing welcoming smiles, great fruit and vegetables, and of course the best (often home-marinated) olives and watermelons in the area!
Business has been up and down over the last year. This a little 'one year on' anniversary message to encourage everyone to keep supporting the shop. Or if you haven't yet been, go!!
I'm just back from shopping - they've just had a delivery of fresh organic citrus fruits from Cyprus (the lemons are out of this world), wild hollyhocks (they make amazing soup), rocket and coriander and all sorts of other things. They have huge and sweet pomegranates. And all the usual stuff. The last batch of olives are even better than usual.
These days food shopping is often soulless- harsh tube-lighting, plastic packaging, food which tastes of not much, staff who don't look happy to be there, glum customers who don't want to talk to anyone. I've experienced this in supermarkets and even some of the larger stores on Green Lanes.
Michli's appears less polished around the edges to the untrained eye. But they are keen to the point of obsessive about providing good quality, special food, shop hygiene and treating customers like human beings and valued friends. Sometimes products are cheaper, some are more expensive, but they charge a fair price based on how much things cost them.
If you're one of the hundreds of people who waves when you walk past and gets a little lift to your day by the smile and recognition you receive, why not stop one day and browse? Enjoy the experience. Ask them what special things they've got in this week. Ask them for a recipe suggestion. Ask Andreas to help you choose the sweetest tangerines. I've learnt to cook amazing, simple, fresh dishes from Andreas (the hollyhock and squash soup with lots of lemon and bulghur wheat is my fave).
I don't think it's the kind of shop that can last forever - a little window to a Cypriot village shop in a harsher 21st century city world perhaps. Food for the soul as well as calories for the body. Let's enjoy it while we can!

Shilpa, you are so right, this shop is a little gem, and they deserve to survive. There's so much s**t on Green Lanes that seems to do well, this is a genuinely great shop, and it really needs local support. It would be a shame for it to go, definitely.

:) great, both. And tell your neighbours too!
I now try and buy at least 70% of my fruit and veg there. And halloumi cheese. And treats such as olives and their halloumi bread (it's aMAzing!). I also buy dried beans/dried fruit there by the weight.
I forgot to mention eggs!! Their eggs are localish and free-range and really good value, one of the most popular items.

Must give this shop a try - I walk past fairly often but have never been in. To be completely honest, I wasn't sure what kind of a shop it was, almost looks like it could be a wholesaler from the outside and I wondered if it was mostly serving local restaurants.
Love the architecture of this little parade - perhaps they could just do with better signposting on the outside?
