Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
What colour is your hall?
Pathetically, I can't decided what colour to paint the hall of my three-bed house on the Ladder. It's North facing and so rather dark, but currently white which I find too cold. I would like a colour, but can't seem to decide what would work - bright and bold, or subtle. Any suggestions of colours that have worked for you?

Our hall is half panelled. We have the (wood) panels painted in white gloss and then the top half painted in quite a bright yellow - somewhere between primary yellow and lemon. It was like that when we moved in - I absolutely love it because it is so warm and welcoming, but I don't think I would have been brave enough to choose it myself if I hadn't seen it already (if you see what I mean).

My hall faces North too and it works well, light but not cold tones. You can come and have a look if you like. It now needs redoing but you will get an idea.

Mine is dulux mix to order. Called dusted moss 2. It's a lovely light grey, very neutral and calm and works really well against white.
My top tip would be to go to homebase, get tester pots mixed up. You then paint the testers onto plain lining paper, cut around edges so you have a block of colour, and then look at in the different lights of your hall. Don't paint the testers straight on the wall because you get muddled by seeing them all next to each other!

Ours is Agua by Ecos paints http://www.ecosorganicpaints.co.uk/
Our hall is also north facing and until 3 years ago was a rather unattractive green so I guess almost anything light was going to be an improvement! I'm really happy with it though. Ecos paints are really nice to work with - the decorator who did much of our painting 3 years ago was impressed and we've used them ourselves too. We have Savannah in our living room which I also really like and is nice and warm and light. I'm with Jude on the tester pots though - try some out!

Thanks, I have already bought about six tester pots, ranging in price from £1 to £4 each... (Farrow and Ball!). I'm usually very clear about colours, being a painter in my spare time, but this one is defeating me.

Farrow and Ball - Pointing for woodwork, Lime White for walls top half, and I think bottom half is String.

Orange below dado, yellow with a hint of orange above dado. Grey dado rail and door frames. Same orange (eggshell finish) on the room doors. Not garish tones, you need to research the exact colour tones carefully!
