Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have gone through the previous discussions but there doesn't seem to be anything hugely recent! I have recently moved to the area, between manor house tube and green lanes station and need to register with a GP. From previous discussions Bridge House seems to have a really inflexible appointments system (where you can only get appointments by phoning first thing in the morning?!), and generally doesn't seem to be great. Does anyone have any experience of the Heron Practice? It seems 'okay' on NHS reviews, and has better reviews than most. Any other recommendations would be welcome.

I've been registered at the Heron practice for 14 or 15 years... Originally because we moved to a flat around the corner from them but were glad to be able to stay with them when we moved to The Ladder. I've been very happy with the doctors/staff there, most of the partners have been there a good while and as a mum with young kids I have seen them all! They don't mind which doctor you see and because it's a big practice you're likely to find at least one you like. The huge plus for us though has been the fact that they will see under fives first thing in the morning without an appointment if you are there early enough - only once out of many visits have I been turned away because they were full. I would definately recommend the practice.

Hi Tessa thank you for your reply. In terms of booking appointments, can you phone up any time of the day and say ''can I have an appointment in the next couple of weeks?''? For urgent appointments (e.g. a bad cold/flu type symptoms that isn't worthy of A&E) how easy is it to get appointments on the day/within a few days? I don't have children (as of yet...) so that isn't such an issue, but good to know!

I think the appointments system has changed a few times over the years but they always have a certain number of on the day appointments but you do need to get on the phone at 8am and keep trying to get through. There is no phone queue and it's always engaged so you just have to keep trying. They will quiz you as to how urgent it is for these appointments but I don't have a problem with that. Beyond that I think availability depends on how flexible you can be, so if you don't mind who you see or what time you go you'll get something within a couple of weeks, if it's a particular doc or certain times only then it can be longer. It might be worth you giving them a call, maybe ask for the practice manager and ask some questions. I've also been offered a telephone consultation at least once - it was for one of the kids but was really useful anyway.

Hi Imogen. Cedar practice, next door to Heron, is also quite good. The doctors are all really nice. I've been there for over six years. The appointment system is that if you need to be seen that day, you call first thing and a doctor will call you back. Otherwise you wait a week or so, depending on which doctor you want to see. They're mid renovations at the moment, so in temporary accommodation in another part of the building.

The appointment system at Bridge House has changed recently, in my experience for the better. They now operate a sort of triage system where everyone who calls in first thing in the morning is seen by a nurse who then decides whether you need to see a doctor. I'm not sure what the deal is if you phone in however.

I've been at Bridge House for over 10 years and am afraid I'm a fairly regular attender. I'm happy there, I like the doctors and have usually found the receptionists to be helpful.

Thank you everyone for your responses. One more question, how many female doctors are there at your practice? Or, is it fairly easy to see a female doctor if requested? Also, has anyone had experience of doctors referring you on to various specialists, and if so are they efficient at doing so?

Not exactly near but 25 min walk is Queenswood practice on Park rd. They are amazing and give me appointments at any time and will always see my children if i need a very short notice appointment, They have lots of alternative therapists there too and on call staff who can answer questions on the phone if needed. I have used their out of hours a few times too and they have been great. I have found all staff there to be fantastic, ESP the nurses who do kiddie immunisations. I know its in crouch end so not on the doorstep but I think it's well worth the extra journey.

There is only 1 male doctor out of 7 at the Heron Practice! See their website for more info

I have had referrals to Gastroenterology at the Homerton and for physio at the John Scott Health Centre - both straightforward with probably typical waiting times - I don't remember the details now.

Hi Tessa (and everyone else). Thank you for all your replies. I registered with Heron Practice this morning. The lady at reception was nice and I managed to book a health check and doctors appointment all in one go :) Now it's time to find a dentist...if anyone knows of any dentists taking on NHS patients please let me know!
