Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Apart from morrisons (too many queues) or the fish shop in the food hall of the shopping city (it's rarely fresh from previous experiences). Is there anywhere else ?

There's usually a fish stall on the High Road, well on one of the side roads just on the corner of the High Road, about half way to Turnpike Lane,

I think it's Wednesday to Saturday. Best to get there in the morning as they tend to run out of the good stuff by lunchtime, esp on Saturdays.

I rate them. The fish is fresh every day and much cheaper than the shops in Crouch End and Muswell Hill. The only thing is that they don't clean and scale so sometimes you may have to do that yourself if they don't have ready prepared. Also worth noting that they'll also get you in whatever you want - just tell them and you can pick it up the next day. We've used that for things like crabs and clams.

I've always wondered about this stall and never bought from it. Doesn't the fish get contaminated by the fumes and dirt from the High Road ?

You're kidding, right? It's laid out fresh every day, so 'exposed' for a maximum of 7-8 hours. You can always wash it when you get home - I'm no scientist but 7-8 hours of airtime is hardly going to penetrate beyond the surface, let alone 'contaminate', I would have thought. Or don't eat the skin if you're really concerned. On that basis, are you saying you'd never buy fruit or veg from anyone on Green Lanes who's got an external display? I'm assuming you haven't stopped eating fish altogether. If so, compared to the risk of mercury exposure (which is a whole different issue) this seems trivial.

I wasn't kidding: it was a genuine concern. Most parents would baulk at exposing their kids to High Road fumes for 8 hours a day  :-)

While the fish is definitely fresh, I think we can be fairly confident they've stopped breathing. So they won't be inhaling any fumes.

I think the two Chinese supermarkets (Whymark Ave and the little one on Westbury Ave) both sell some fish too, but I've never tried any from either.

The fishmongers, proper ones are in Crouch End and Mus Hill.  Good but pricey.

If you go further up Green Lanes past Wood Green station towards the North Circular, there is Pats (Green Lanes Fisheries)- superb fish monger. Better to get there early-ish. As good as Walter Purkis in Crouch End/ Muswell Hill.  If you are on the bus past Wood Green station it's around three stops up on the right hand side.https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?expflags=enable_star_based_justifica...

There's a fantastic fishmongers in Wood Green Shopping City market hall.

Excellent fresh fish octopus/squid and very reasonably priced.
