Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Apprenticeship event, Haringey Civic Centre, Wednesday 14th August 2 to 6 pm
Lynne Featherstone MP has organised an apprenticeship event to take place at the Civic Centre, High Road, Wood Green N22 8LE. You can read more about it at http://www.lynnefeatherstone.org/2013/07/lynne-featherstone-mp-and-...
The event will introduce young people to a range of apprenticeships and companies that are offering these opportunities. Companies will be giving out information on their apprenticeship opportunities at the event, and also holding free workshops to give people advice with their applications.
Any young or unemployed person in Haringey who would like an apprenticeship, or more information on what they involve, should come along to the Civic Centre on the 14th and find out more.

£2.65 an hour - how is anyone supposed to survive on that? No promise of a job at the end either, even with successful completion. This looks like another cheap labour scheme from a government which wants to do away with decent living standards for the majority of the population.

They're not supposed to survive on that: it's paid training leading to a qualification.

Alex you are being unreasonably negative and unrealistic. Even in the most buoyant times, few unskilled employees are immediately profitable for an employer.
There are few forms of employment where there is a "promise" of a job for life. Apprenticeships were never *well* paid, but they *can* lead to well-paid jobs.
The past demise of apprenticeships in Britain is to be deprecated. The system of apprenticeships especially in engineering (coupled with worker representation on Boards), in Germany is one of long-term factors that make her the powerful economy she is today.
If the goal of any government were "to do away with decent living standards for the majority of the population" then they would not be re-elected, which presumably is their goal.
Employers need to be encouraged to offer apprenticeships. This apprenticeship event this Wednesday is to be thoroughly welcomed.
Well done to the MP for organising it, to the local councillor for promoting it and to the council for hosting it.

That's excellent news, I'm sure a great deal of people in Haringey, young and otherwise, who will relish the opportunity to meet a Government minister in person and give her some personal feedback on the effects of her Government's decisions. Maybe people could pop along after their regular visit to the local food bank, or maybe take a couple of hours out of their desperate and vain search for affordable accommodation? That's if they're not tied up on a compulsory free labour scheme at one of the former local employers.
