Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Was just wondering if anyone else had tried to go to Sainsbury's yesterday afternoon. It took me about 25 minutes to drive from the top of Green Lanes to the Sainsbury's end. I could have walked there and back quicker, and if I hadn't been en route to East London I would have. When I finally arrived at the entrance to the retail park uniformed guards told me that there weren't letting any more cars into the car park because it was taking up to 3 hours for cars to exit onto Green Lanes, and people were getting so frustrated that violence had broken out! It all felt like a Ben Elton futuristic satire for a moment. Can anyone tell me, is this normal for a Saturday? I don't usually shop at the weekend if I can help it so I've never encountered this before.

3 hours is unusually bad, but it does get very blocked up; it took my husband 45 mins to get out yesterday about noon. Hard to believe that the new TK Maxx won't make it worse.

We got stuck there about 2 hours a couple of Saturdays ago and again for almost an hour on Friday evening :-/

It used to be like this a lot and I don't think is so bad any more. I think the reason will have been the roadworks just south of there on Green Lanes as it was backed up by 9am. But even under normal circumstances, don't drive there friday afternoon or saturday!

It's horrific if there any traffic problems in the area, because that in turn affects how many cars can exit. It has been an issue for ages. There was some internal rearrangement a few years ago in response to a particularly bad spell but my sense is that the main factor is entirely out of the control of the complex itself. Personally I'd never drive there at the weekend.

Took me over an hour to get out recently. Horrific in the heat. Never driving there again!

Took me 2.5 hours to get out yesterday - it was a nightmare - had to call 101 as the guys 'managing' the car park were making it worse and people were justifiably very irrate. It was particularly unhelpful to be told you couldn't leave your car as there is a maximum stay of 2.5 hours. It felt unsafe and should there have been need for the emergency services to get in to the car park they wouldn't have been able to do so. I won't be returning for a long time after that performance. Whoever is responsible, and i am pretty sure it's gonna be one of those situations where there're loads of parties involved, needs to take action. The situation is ludicrous.

I got caught by this a few years ago (last time I ever drove there at the weekend) and did indeed leave my car there - I went back that evening to collect it. The idea that you'd get fined for that is just insane. You should contact Sainsburies and ask them for their view on that policy.

What amazes me is that it doesn't seem to put people off going there. Surely once you'd experienced that you'd shop elsewhere by car or just go on foot?

A bit off-post but this is one of the reasons I'm opposed to the new Hornsey Sainsburies. The nature of the traffic there, particularly the bottle necks that build up when you are heading east and the narrow main road that grinds to a halt if a bus stops to pick up passengers, makes me worry that there will be similar problems.

You can see the history of this by using the tag I've added under Catriona's post.

Wow. Seems like it is a seriously bad piece of planning both on the part of Sainsbury's and on the part of the council, or whoever allowed it to go ahead in the first place. It does sound dangerous. And good point about Hornsey. I'll read all those links.

Thanks,

C

It's the Arena car park (the one adjacent to Homebase) which often becomes congested. The cars exiting Sainsburys are already in a queue to reenter Green Lanes, and generally don't want to give way to cars exiting arena. For each light change only 2-3 cars escape.

It's best to go either very early or late in the afternoon.

I want to know if any analysis has been done if the proposed works on green lane are going to affect traffic on green lanes and side roads.  Traffic is for me, the biggest issue in this area.  I would love them to make a second entrance to sainsbury's somewhere

If what happened on Saturday happens again, I reckon someone will create their own second entrance!! That is what it needs though, you are right - the way to do it could possibly be to separate the Sainsburys traffic from the rest of the Arena traffic - no idea how it could be done and it's one of those that if it could, why wasn't it done inthe first place?
