Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Plant pests, what is this? Yuck!

I noticed my hydrangea (one of two) was looking a bit knackered this week-end, so I took a closer look and found this clinging to the underside of the leaves:

They're soft, and there's nothing in them.

What is it? Does anyone know? It's all over the plant, and it's killing it by the looks of things.

YUCK!!!!

Cottony scale I think. You can see the brown scale insect at one end of the of the soft white blob in most cases in this pic.

You could try removing the worst affected leaves and spraying the rest with mild soapy water. There are also some biological controls available - lacewings and parasitic wasps - but I'd be worried that these would just fly away.
