FYI Very special dispensation is expected to be granted for a very limited period of one month to run Mallard's sister locomotive, LNER A4 4-6-2 no. 4464 'Bittern', at speeds of up to 90 mph over the East Coast main line. 'Bittern' will run just three public excursions featuring this high speed running*.

You can enjoy the unique thrill of riding behind an A4 Pacific at its design speed for the first time since the end of steam in the 1960s.

This train, running Saturday 29th June, will leave King's Cross and also pick up passengers at Potter's Bar. From there northwards 66 miles of line have been identified as being suitable for over 75 mph running.

Normally enjoying the last moments of my beautysleep (ha) at 08.20, but must try to get up for this beauty.  Haven't seen said chuffer for yonks and last hauled by it on an 'End of Steam' era railtour!

Hope steam followers have also heard the excellent news about electrifying the Gospel Oak to Barking Line, linked to the East Coast route by the curve at Harringay.  Big BUT though, they are talking about only starting the project in 2015, when the extra capacity and longer trains are needed now, but realistically could be finished by next year.

Years of lobbying has finally paid off!

Attached are a couple of photos of "Bittern" taken to Ally Pally station, as the "Ebor Streak" charter passed at a pleasingly sedate pace..

Yes, I don't think that it was quite up to 90mph........ I watched it from Alexandra Park. One pic below, another one here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47046427@N03/9163745385/in/set-7215762...
