Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The thread about Obergine being sold and the speculation about what kind of shop it will become, made me think about what kind of shops or restaurants I'd like to have on Green Lanes. What if we could choose, what would it be?

Friends of mine would like a Waitrose, and I used to want Pizza Express or an M&S food. But maybe a deli that sells wine, cheese etc would be nice too.

I'm very interested in what others would like, so GO!

But I don't wanna go to bloomin crouch end or muswell hill for my food - I want it HERE on our strip!

perhaps there's a divide between homeowners and renters here. personally, i would prefer one of the following:

-crack den

-palace of Fixed Odds Betting Terminals

-payday lender

on the basis that it might stop my rent going up again (40% increase in 2 years!).

that said, i guess if the rent's gone up, i may as well enjoy a Nicaraguan coffee at the vegetarian art collective.

40% in two years!! My god; that must hurt. Sympathy vibes (although given the content of your comment. my first typo altered version of that last sentence may have worked better - "Sympathy vices").

Hi Jessica, no offence to you or your friends, but come on, let's be more imaginative than wishing for a chain (Waitrose, M&S, Pizza Express...) that would make our unique high street more like the awful thing that is High Street Britain!

My choices that I think we really need, in no particular order (except the first one) are:

- Top of the list must surely be a good fishmonger! We can buy bread and meat at the market or the butchers, there's some lovely deli stuff at the market and there are loads of greengrocers selling lovely produce (can't get enough of the flat peaches at the moment), but I really HATE not having a fishmongers I can pop down the road to. The fish counter at Sainsburys is not very good, a bit far and well, who wants to buy fish from a supermarket anyway. We need a fishmonger! The one that opened in Highbury Park a year or two ago is absolutely first class, as good as Mr. Hatt on Essex Road. If we get something close to that quality on the strip it would be amazing. It would also be great to have another one back at the market too.

- Italian restaurant (proper one, run by Italians, we've got loads living in the area now)

- Italian deli (like the lovely old school ones round Clarkenwell way, also selling good Italian wine, err hang on, that's what I want to open!)

- SE Asian (Thai, Malay or Vietnamese, but NOT a fake catch-all combo!)

- Japanese

- Proper nice eat in Fish and Chips or an old school Chop House

But most of all, I want them all to be ONE OFF, family run businesses!

Fishmongers would be great.
I wonder if regeneration will bring more diversity to the high street ? When I moved here in the late 80's there was an Italian family run deli ,a fish and chip shop ,a buthchers ,an Indian restaurant ,a Chinese restaurant ,a traditional green grocers and more stuff I've probably forgotten . In the 90's as shops closed they seemed to turn into private social clubs but now those have all but gone . The trend now apart from betting shops seems to be large Turkish restaurants , where next I wonder .........

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned a good Thai place - possibly even a takeaway akin to Tiffintins Indian takeaway in Hornsey.  But maybe with some seating area - possibly benches like Busaba on Waldorf Street in Soho.  Busaba is relatively cheap and great quality.

I agree about a fishmongers. We have such good green grocers and a butchers, but I want fish too! And a decent deli with wine and cheese, but that might not help my waistline!

I'd love to see more options on the pub front. I know though from experience that the margins are not in the favour of publicans. I'm a big fan of traditional pubs.

After all community is created in pubs.

It's hard moving from a Cornish fishing town with 37 pubs to Harringay with it's 4!

This doesn't really require a new store, but better beer options, ala Jack's on Stroud Green Rd, which manages to have a surprising array of interesting stuff along the cheap polish lager.  Presumably this is a distribution issue, but Jack seem to have solved it...
