Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My partner and I were confronted by an aggressive man a pedestrian crossing last night. As we were crossing, he said something like, "you guys are going to get it" as he reached into his jacket. We managed to get away and I called 999. It was a bit frustrating as the telephonist could not find the area on his system. 15 minutes later I got a call from Tina in the Harringay Ward. It seemed to be implied that as we didn't see a weapon then there was no threat. There was a similar report of a person matching the same description around that time. I am hoping to get some follow up on this incident today. What do you think the chances are of getting a follow up?

How the police can stop any violence, no one seems to know, this is not restricted to football. Check out any high street with pubs on a Friday and Saturday night. There has long been problems between Turks and Kurds, the football is just an excuse for the extreme showing of national pride.
Glyn - it might be an idea to step up police presence on Green Lanes on weds night? Should Turkey win or lose, it's inevitable that things will get a bit lively.
Wednesday night will be nothing compared to what the people of Wimbledon will suffer. Apparently they have been unable to get enough Gewurztraminer and Blue Nun though from the continent and a riot is expected from the Germans living there. Mein Gott!
At last someone who knows about football and is experienced to comment ; )
I just don't get it. This happens EVERY time Turkey play football and still the police don't do the obvious thing and just close off Green Lanes for a couple of hours. While I have huge amounts of sympathy for the Kurdish cause, its appalling that their reaction to the flying of the Turkish flag by celebrating footie fans is to chuck bottles etc. But by the same token, why don't the police save everyone all the hassle and just close off Green Lanes for a bit for a couple of hours after Turkey are playing - this is the inevitable consequence of letting Turkish convoys fly up and down this part of Green Lanes. Instead, we have to put up with pitched battles and innocent people caught up in mindless violence because they can't take a bit of preventative action. Whatever happened to joined-up thinking?
Yes I was going to say that this must have similarities. The Turk Cypriot flag was banned, I thought... but a lot of people were flying it on Friday night when I was coming home along Green Lanes. I imagine that if there are Kurds flying their flag too, it could be quite a night... but still nothing compared to the troubles in Northern Ireland.
By closing GL off to traffic would just make everyone walk up and down waving flags and possibly more serious confrontation. A higher police presence would possibly be a deterrent, I don’t know?

When South Africa won the world egg chasing : ) cup, there was quite a bit of bad blood mainly on the SA side. Unfortunately some people cannot curtail their testosterone or handle their alcohol.

In this country we have quashed hooliganism quite a lot since the black days of the seventies and eighties, it seems that such activities are more prominent in other European countries including Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain and numerous Eastern European countries.

Other European countries now look to the English league and stadia as an example for eradicating not only hooliganism but racism too, and for those reasons alone I am proud to be part of many football supporters groups and well worthy initiatives.

Many people talk badly of football and in ninety percent of those cases have ever experienced football, apart from some live Sky game in a pub.

Yet another rant over : )
I have been informed by our duties office that a serial of officers have been assigned to Green Lanes tonight
Apologies Colin but we were off work Monday and Tuesday just back today. I did post on this thread earlier asking if you had a description that may be of use for us
Oh yes, another game involving Turkey. Maybe the Germans will do the job for the Met tonight :)
I will stick my neck on the line and say 3-0 to the Germans.
I just want to congratulate the local police on their operations last night on Green Lanes following Turkeys departure from the Euros.

I was out with Mrs B last night and didn't see any bother and I think the fact that the police had closed Green Lanes for an hour or so worked.
