Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Local Firm Helps in Restoration of Buckingham Palace & Downing Street

South Tottenham Firm Metalcraft manufacture railings that end up in some pretty high profile places

Walking home from the Google event this afternoon, I engaged in my now habitual nosing around and discovered a little gem of industrial endeavour over in South Tottenham.

Metalcraft have been manufacturing traditional iron railings since 1960. Over the past 50 years, they've got so good at it that their railings are ending up in some quite surprising places. They even did Downing Street some years back. So where were they to go from there?

The answer for Metalcraft was to move west a bit and start working with all the railings in the area around Buckingham Palace. Perhaps I'm easily impressed, but I thought it was rather nice to find this unassuming little local backstreet workshop making the railings for the Queen.

I also enjoyed the honest industry and timelessness of the workshop - and tried to capture a little of it with a few snaps during their lunch break (I think the last one is my favourite).

Hugh, I heard that one of the Omega Units also had connections of this kind - to the palace in fact.

Great - let us all know anything you find out!

Great pictures and interesting to find out what is manufactured in the area. That last picture looks like an oil painting.

Thanks. I shot and processed the last photo to recall a painterly style, but not to replicate it. It's all just playing wth light levels. Nothing else is added or taken away.

Thanks - really interesting and I I love the pictures.

lovely Hugh, i love what you do sir. thank you for doing it. i had to add i did a table for the palace some years ago too. ill try to scan pics from my 'slr' , (i photo everything!)

it is a 'coal' table yes 'coal' parrot coal no less and its so dense some very very select pieces of furniture were made for wealthy types over the years.  htis one had gone to a stone restorer who did an amazing job putting ew pieces in where missing.  he couldng get it to shine though.  i did!

i used my diverse experience and inquisitive problem solving mind to devise a unique blend of french pilishing and a secret ingridedient prevailed and a shiny parrot coal table was the result.  great to hear we have talent in many forms around .

yours sincerely

p.s should be in ham and high tomorrow after the burglary, attempted robbery and assault led to conviction of a persistant local robber druggie who for 20 years has plagued hundreds of the locals, invading their homes and shoplifting from shops to put heroin in his body!

Lovely photos!

Knowing this makes my railings and gate that little bit more special.
I designed my own railings and gateway and Metal Craft made them for me about five years ago now.
Very good firm with excellent advice too during the process.
Andy

hi Andy, I’m interested in getting new fence and gate, can you advise approx. How much it was per metre? Thanks

Hi Alex - it will be dependent on size length height number of finials what type of finials , details on fixings  etc mine was approx 2ft high ( fixed onto new stock wall) approx 3.5m long with gate which had steel work hidden posts then clad with stock brick piers. Was. Approx £4K plus installation.

Firstly you need a design / drawing, then  I’d suggest getting at least two prices.

Lovely pictures.  Thank you.
