Sunday saw the market's busiest day ever Photo: Hugh
The April sunshine and a programe of live music and dancing brought the crowds to Harringay Market in what market organiser Jessica Vos described as the market's busiest day ever.
Yesterday, it seemed like the market had hit its stride. It works better in the new South Harringay venue, although no one is quite able to put their finger on why. And, yesterday was almost the perfect local market day. After weeks of unremitting gloom the sun was shining and with a party on the cards the crowds responded and came out in their droves.
April's first Harringay Market was everything a community market should be - friendly, lively, busy, happy, buzzy and of course tasty! Everyone I talked to commented on the atmosphere. It felt almost more like a festival than a market. And, just like a festival, it seemed like almost every stall had a queue!
The entertainment started off with excellent teen band Obsession and a great collection of pop and alternative music. Dancing group Swing Patrol then got the market moving with an infectiously boppy set of jive dance numbers. Finally blues band Blues Prescription took the stage with an accomplished set of blues.
Jessica plans to arrange more entertainment at the market, but at the moment she's trying to get the balance right between not creating too much local disturbance and providing an extra buzz to the weekly food festival.
All in all a great day - well done Jessica.

Hey Jessica,
I was thinking yesterday, how about some un-amplified buskers of the folky/world music type. The neighbours wouldn't be able to hear them but they'd enhance the atmosphere. Or small acapella singing groups? I bet there are local musicians who'd welcome the chance to play a few tunes and pass the hat, maybe get a free lunch and the chance to flog a CD or two. You could audition them first, as they do in Covent Garden (I'd be happy to help out there). There may be some performance licencing issues, but I assume you sorted that already for Saturday.
The music was fun on Saturday and obviously drew the crowds, but I think the some of the stallholders found it a little loud, as did I.
Yes, a really amazing afternoon and I only wish I could have stuck around longer! Well done Jessica.
Hi Jessica
A good friend of mine, Mike 'Dr Blue' McKeon, does solo gigs plaing guitar & harmonica and singing, so if you like I could ask him if he would be up for doing something at the market in the summer?
Regards, Dave.
Hope you enjoyed meeting council leader Claire Kober and you didn't mind my introducing you. Good to see her there, I think. Shall I publish those photos of you guys chatting now..............hmmm?
Hey Guys
What a lovely day it was last Sunday at the Farmers Market, great music and the Swing dance was fun, my friends & I are going along to their classes, also to see the Blues Prescription sometime.
I believe the current venue is better because it is smaller therefore 'cosier' with not such a large space to fill up.
More days like this please.
Frankie & friends
