Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey offer free Home Energy Assessment for Green Deal - subject to availability

I received this message from the Haringey environmental team recently. Note that the offer is extended into April and not ending at the end of march as stated on the leaflet.

I was also visited by a representative of Wilmott Dixon who are working on behalf of the GLA's retrofit programme RE:NEW. These are also planning to carry out assessments in the borough in the coming weeks so there is a lot of activity around retrofitting coming up.

Do take advantage of these offers, they will help to keep rising fuel bills in check and to reduce our impact on the planet.

Haringey Council have recently successfully bid for funding from Department of Energy and Climate Change [DECC] to offer residents a free home energy efficiency Green Deal Assessment. The Green Deal is a Government scheme launched in January 2013, to help householders carry out energy efficiency assessments and refurbishment without any upfront costs.

This is also part of the Haringey 4020 drive to achieve a 40% Carbon Reduction across the borough by 2020.

Since the second week in February, we’ve had some community outreach workers/volunteers door-knocking around the east and west of the borough to promote home energy efficiency assessments and the Green Deal and sign up residents to receive a free home energy assessment. This will also include social housing households and properties. Haringey council is only offering a free [no obligation] assessment and will not provide or offer the Green Deal plan or finance. The offer would have ended by the 31st of March 2013 but it has been extended for another 2 weeks into April.

We are contacting various community outreach organisations to introduce this project and hope that they can help us to disseminate the information through their networks.

I have attached an e-copy of the project leaflet and will be very glad if you can kindly assist and get the message across to the contacts and networks in the Haringey Online forum.E-copy Free home assessment.pdf

I went for this.  There are still some teething problems but definately worth getting the assessment done.  Wasn't cost effective for me but might work for a house or family who will be around for 20 years or more.  My assessor Moira was really helpful with additional webpages on other solutions suchas slimline double glazing in existing sash windows. Cheaper than new double glazed sashes and better than throwing out perfectly good ones.

Solid wall insulation (suitable for a lot of Harringay housing stock) is still being debated in IHBC and other circles, for example saying that it doesnt allow the building to breathe and causes condensation and eventual failure.  Moira researched this for me too and apparently there is a new system using wood chip (on the inside) which might be more effective.  A bit more costly though.  I would generally be against solid wall insulation on the outside as it will affect the street scene of a row of terraces.  Surprisingly though Councils have not requested planning permission for this work......
