Harringay's High Street Pocket Park Gets Go Ahead
In January we reported on an application made by Harringay's Green Lanes traders for a further £40,000 to create a new pocket park for Harringay. (Full description further down in the thread).
Today the London Mayor's office has announced that the local bid has been successful and we will be getting the funding from the Pocket Parks programme.
So, that's another big pat on the back for Rob Tao of the Traders' association!

Great news and it will certainly add positively to the local environment. The pocket park on Hornsey Park Road is fabulous and cared for by the local residents

This is excellent news. It looks great. It even looks better than betting shops. Will it mark the turning of tide of the oil slick of betting shops along Green Lanes? I for one hope so.
I hope that, once implemented, it will be maintained and that greater attention might be paid to littering and other anti-social behaviour, including the expectoration that I often witness in Green Lanes.

what do betting shops add to society? Its a real shame the council can't ban them from high streets - they seem to be the only business that can afford the rent and rates these days. I wonder what the result would be if they had a referendum on betting shops on the high street? Are the many suffering(!) this blight for the right of the few to bet in a high street shop. I don't know the answer but would be interested to know. Sorry this has stayed a bit from the pocket park celebration!

what do betting shops add to society?
We will likely have to endure some level of betting shops whatever happens, but since the last government's flawed Gambling Act, it became open slather, with uncontrolled expansion of their "industry". The Act effectively took away all power from local councils and from the community, to set limits on betting shop numbers.
What is needed is deep reform of that Act.
While former Councillor H. Lister was both pro-gambling and pro-Casino (at Alexandra Palace), I suspect that a majority of councillors might not be happy with the density of betting shops along Green Lanes. N.B. betting shop "clustering" is not the problem: it is the main symptom of the problem (the Gambling Act).
Congratulations to all those responsible for the pocket park, it'll be a wonderful step forward.

How do we go about "Wightman Square," top of Bourgoyne Rd? On the face of it, it has a clock tower, a Victorian post box, three restaurants, a corner shop , a tailer or two, a mechanics garage with muse buildings a Hotel & a regional transport link with a bridge to our local library, we may even see a return from residential conversions back to shops for Harringay village... Optimism hey?
