Who wants a cat

We have a young black male cat in our garden. been there since soon before Xmas. Very shy at first. We have been feeding it and made a nice cashmere lined bed in the arbour. It cant live with us because we have dogs and cats and they wont like it. It is now keen to make friends and needs a good home. Any takers?

Sorry to be boring, but I'm assuming you've done all the usual things about checking if someone is missing him, like having him scanned for a microchip and wotnot? Well done for looking after him.

Have phoned the vets and animal shelters.

Only just getting him used to us so haven't caught him to put him in a cage and take him to vet to check mirochip.

Don't suppose he would like that much so would rather catch him and pass him on rather than have him checked and bring him back. Don't suppose there is such a thing as a portable remote microchip checker?

It's worth checking with the animal shelters if they do have such a thing - I think someone mentioned it on another thread (i.e. that someone would come out and scan), but I can't remember which thread and my mind might be playing tricks - I'm sure someone else who knows definitively will be along shortly! Don't ask the RSPCA, though - if he's got FIV, he'll needlessly be put on death row as a matter of policy.

Animal Aid & Advice will come out & collect if you are unable to find him a home or if you can catch him, the Wood Green Animal Shelter try really hard to rehome cats.

Well done for looking after him. What I usually do is build up the trust of the cat over a period of time by feeding it, like you. By the way, snugglesafe heat pads are great if he's got an outside bed. You put the heat pad in the microwave for 6 mins and it stays warm for 10 hours. Then in time you'll be able to catch the cat. I take them to vet and get him scanned and neutered. I usually end up keeping the cat if no owner found as usually my other cats get used to it over a period of time. If not, I find a suitable new owner if possible myself and only turn to an animal shelter as a last resort as they are inundated.

If you can't keep the cat, then I think you're right, ideally try to find a new owner yourself. A photo on here might encourage someone to give him a chance or someone might recognise him.

If you need an animal shelter, then I think a cat has more of a chance at a shelter outside London. Personally, I would not take a cat to Wood Green as in the past I've seen cats stuck there for a very long time. I would go to www.scratchingpost.co.uk and www.foalfarm.org.uk
