Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The 2011 census data released yesterday includes some interesting trends regarding how people in Haringey travel. In particular, car ownership and use seems to be in steep decline. 52% of households in Haringey now have no car or van, a 5% reduction from 2001.

The data on how people get to work is also revealing. In 2001 30% of people in Haringey of working age in employment used a car or van to get to work, in 2011 this dropped to 21%. Bus and train use is up, and across the borough 5% are now cycling to work, nearly double the 2001 figure.

The Guardian today published travel statistics by ward. The trend for less car use seems even more apparent on the ladder, in parts of which I was surprised to see that nearly as many people are cycling to work as driving.

I've heard that more people cycle into the City than drive but could only find this, also derived from the Census data I think which shows this to be true for Hackney but does not list the Square Mile against Car usage.
