Happy New Year everyone! It took us forever to get past the Arena on the bus yesterday afternoon (about 4ish) and it turned out that the police had blocked it off and weren't letting anyone in - I would normally just put it down to traffic control, given how horrible that junction is, but the car park in the section between Homebase and Costa was nowhere near full - was there more to it than people trying to get the last few drinks and nibbles for their NYE celebrations?

Happy New Year!
It was just people trying to get last minute nibbles before it all shut at 4PM. The queue went back into Sainsbury's making it difficult to get out.
Ah, that makes sense, didn't realise they were shutting at 4.
I don't know but...
We arrived on foot - I think around 3/3.30 (???) - there were no police at that stage, but plenty of car drivers hurling abuse at the attendants because the car park was closed, which probably did not help the traffic on Green Lanes with everyone stopping for a shout. The Homebase end car park looked pretty full and there was a traffic jam with people trying to get out, but by the time we finished in Next and got to Sainsbury's the car park was beginning to clear, but still quite full. When we finally got back to the junction, the police had arrived.
I presume they called the police before one of the car park attendants got a tire iron imbedded in their forehead and keep the traffic moving. Walking back down Green Lanes, we saw quite a lot of very tense and angry car drivers (including one woman who got out of her car to scream at another diver face to face for cutting in front of her). That is my take on it - I did not see anything out of the ordinary going on that would suggest something untoward happened in the Arena.
Happy New Year to everyone too!
Green Lanes was backed up a long way south past Manor House, into Hackney. Sat on a stationary bus before I got off and walked (just as it began to chuck it down with rain!) and was very surprised to see that when I finally reached Harringay, the trouble seemed to be just from the retail park and not a major accident or anything more unpredictable.
There should be electronic signs at various points (both end of Endymion perhaps, maybe further up Green Lanes and another near the Manor House junction) warning people when the Arena car park is full/closed/experiencing problems so they can change their plans. And a sign at the entry to the car park too- people get very annoyed to drive in, discover Sainsburys is closed and then have to queue for ages to get back out.
That would require APCOA to actually deliver on some of their promises www.apcoa.co.uk/parkingservices. They can't even get the basics of traffic flowing right round the Arena car parks to where it meets the public highway. Having some sort of intelligence behind it would be great, but a bit of a stretch too far I suspect.
From shortly after midnight Green Lanes was closed between Harringay Bridge and about Mattison. A drunken reveller had wandered into the road and was hit by a car.
Thanks Hugh - that's terrible, but it isn't the thing that I'm referring to as my bus woes were in the afternoon yesterday.
