Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Interested in setting up a gallery/cafe-bar in Harringay?
I'm looking at various premises in Harringay with a view to setting up an art gallery.
I'm considering having a small cafe operation alongside the gallery, as well as renting out part of the premises as studio or office space.
I would be very happy to talk to anyone who might be interested in helping out or getting involved.
I think there are a lot of people in the area who would love to have a gallery on their doorstep, as well as a more trendy cafe to go to! I have a track record in running a successful gallery in east London, as well as providing studios, but I've never run a catering operation or bar.

hi george, i hope you dont mind me aproaching you but i have been looking at this forum this evening and really had no idea how many people are having similar ideas, apart from what i know to be much in demand to exist , the ammount of people wishing to set up get involved and or help as they also want the same things for area people and longevity of what is a very creative bunch of people in a diverse area. i believe success is close and have been building on my own for some 8 years in total,but 6 in acctual use creative live work community offering a tailored village feel to a complex of spaces in one big space that has tennants who for a collective that opens its doors 25% of the time to the locals of all ages on a scheduled rota basis to teach back their individual specialist skills ensuring sharing and growing of new talent as an ethos. you mentioned you write bids for funding and run events ,, we need help with the bids and anyone local and willing to help is very welcome to get on borad and become part of what makes this al happen. we have been open for three months now and the funding side has been left to slide to a stop so really would appreciate some expert advice. again i hope you dont mind me launching into this but we need help. yours sincerely

p.s the premises in press release got snatched by developers as we couldnt get enough support in time but the same principles are there for whatever space we get , hand picked individuals , companies , expert in their field occupy and teach collectivley

The perfect site for this would really be where the martial arts centre used to be. It's now one of those kitchen furniture suppliers for kebab shops I believe (the passage that leads off Green Lanes to commercial space. It's towards the turnpike lane end of the parade)
I think Harringay Arts also put forward a proposal to do something along the lines of an arts centre at some point, which may have involved the snooker hall. I havent heard anything about them for a while but guess they still have something going on the Hermitage Road business park. Their gallery was called Http

I posted about wanting to start an art gallery in Harringay back in November 2012, and I've now ended up running one on the 'Haggerston Riviera' in Hackney, on the canal.
I wanted to feed back on my experiences in Harringay, although to be fair, I didn't exactly push every stop out to get a venue. I looked at what used to be 'Silverstreak' hair salon, opposite the Salisbury pub: it was a reasonable size and shape for a gallery, and it also has an amazing garden, so would have been lovely for a gallery and cafe. It would have taken masses of money and work to get the unit and the garden into a fit state to use, but the owner 'didn't get' what I wanted to do i.e. an art gallery, so he gave a lease to some people who only lasted a few months and didn't seem to be doing anything. The premises are now boarded up again.
I'm paying less now than I would have paid for Silverstreak, I have much bigger light and airy premises on the canal, with an N1 postcode, surrounded by well-heeled clients and trendy cafes. I'm very happy, but I would have been just as happy working near my home, and surrounded by my Haringey neighbours. I found that when I rang about premises, I wouldn't get a reply, despite repeated calls.
This is just my experience, as Blend and Jam in a Jar seemed to have managed to get a lease on Green Lanes, and they are a brilliant addition to the offer here. In Hackney/Haggerston, the idea of running an art gallery isn't seen as strange, but in Green Lanes, it's a mystifying concept, and it just means that we don't get the diversity of venues and offers in the area, which is a pity.
If anyone is looking for a venue for a possible gift shop or neighbourhood gallery/cafe, the Silverstreak shop would be great, really charming if you were to gut it and start again.
On a final positive note, Cllr Karen Alexander did get the cracked paving stones outside Silverstreak repaired by the owner after he had let them fall into complete ruin!!
