Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey council and Veolia representatives seem to be following the bin and recycling lorries to check the collection today .

I was about to ring Veolia because the bin men didn't clear all my rubbish.

I noticed people outside in high vis jackets looking at the bins. Luckily I happened to be at home and went out to talk to them.

Basically my rubbish bin was too full to fit all my waste. There were two bags of polystyrene packaging that can't be recycled that I'd left next to my bin. The bin men didn't take them.

She said I needed to take the to the tip, or put it in my bin now it's empty. I pointed out that if I did that then then bin wont be collected for another two weeks and there won't be room for two weeks worth of rubbish. I have two small children in nappies and the bin is disgusting after two weeks anyway.

If my rubbish isn't being collected I asked what I paid my council tax for? She said that lots of people leave rubbish in their gardens and the bin men can't take it all. But the council will pursue people that don't use their bins properly.

I argued that surely the have to prove first who is leaving the rubbish first and how do they do that if they're flats or multiple occupancy?

The Veolia representative seemed to be at odds with the Haringey council representative. He was nodding in agreement with me, when I said two weekly collection isn't enough and there is rubbish everywhere spilling out of bins.

She told me to contact the council if I'm not happy and we left it at that. She came back a few minutes later and said she was recording it as a failed collection and the bin men should have taken it.

This situation is completely farcical!!  Should I put a note out every week on my bagged up rubbish asking the bin men to take it?

But seriously, if the two weekly collection is here to stay and if it's in the front garden and it looks like rubbish then why not take it, what's the problem?

We all need to keep complaining to Veolia about the poor service.  I have also  also taken to copying my Councillor into the emails so that she is aware the contract is simply not working.  Hopefully Councillors can make Council officers review the contract specification and adjust it?  That is what one would expect but I am not hopeful.....

Two weeks ago I complained to Veolia about the bin men coming round about 40mins before the lorry and placing the bins out in the road and supplied them with photos as proof.. (this was the green bin collection) This meant that when the lorry did turn up, those men had no idea where each bin had come from and they were put back in the wrong gardens. I got three of bins that day, none of them mine as I use the bag option.

Veolia emailed me back with a reply apologising for the service and confirming that this sort of practice was wrong and that armed with my photo evidence the collection guys had been reprimanded (I got the feeling that they had tried to deny it at first) and reminded of their collection duties.

I was watching them the following week and they'd roughly worked out where the photos had been taken from, looking up at mine and my neighbours windows and talking amongst themselves whilst nodding in this direction.

So when I saw the hi-viz observer walking round with them last week I thought it might be something to do with that. Now, reading this, maybe not.

That's a good idea. Do you have the email addresses?
