London's Wooden Roads Rediscovered in N22

Some time ago Stephen from Berlin commented on one of my historical pictures of Green Lanes, to say that he could just make out the blocks of the old wooden road.
I'd never heard that there was such a thing. So being the history nerd that I am I was fascinated to read what he wrote.
Then just this week, I saw on the Bowes and Bounds website that up in Bowes Park a local historian, Caroline Simpson, had spotted the remains of a surviving wooden road on Myddleton Road.
As well as taking the picture above, she gathered together some material she has to tell a little of the story of the wooden road. Fascinating.
With her kind permission, I've put it together into a wee document which I've attached to this post.

Interesting. Supplementary comment on the doc: wooden blocks emerged during road resurfacing in Bloomsbury in the late 90s, and I remember reading somewhere at the time that they were fitted in the more exclusive squares to dull the clatter of hooves and reduce the noise echo.

There was a short stretch of wood block outside the tram depot. I remember it being taken up along with the redundant tram-lines.
We lived in Woodberry Grove so took the wheel-barrow round there, loaded up several times and used them on the fire, they burned very well!
