We used to love China City. We haven't lived in the area for a couple years, so can't attest to its current quality.

It's pretty standard, gloopy Chinese. I glimpsed inside the kitchen the last time I went, however, and that is when it became the last time I went. It looked pretty gross, which is a shame as it is so conveniently located.

Thank you, Pinenut for posting this. Watching for a good recommendation as I haven't found a good one since Shandong closed in Muswell Hill about 7 years ago! Plenty of OK Chinese restaurant, no really good ones found.

I'm not sure of local restaurants. But the Hoo Hing http://www.hoohing.com/ is fantastic. They have a huge range of dim sum and other oriental delights. It's not far from the lee bridge roundabout.

It's well worth a visit, but it's very easy to spend to spend longer than you intended browsing the aisles. What did you buy?

I'm fussy about Chinese! I can certainly make some recommendations for Chinatown and elsewhere in the West End, if you like. For weekend Dimsum a good value and tasty option beyond CT is the Lotus Floating in Docklands. More locally, Shanghai in Dalston is reasonably good and is based in a sympathetic conversion of an old pie and mash shop. Hong Kong born Rob Chau, of Tao Sports, like me, would normally go into Town. When he does eat locally he says he uses the Hot Wok in Winchmore Hill.

HK Diner used to be a lunchtime favourite for me for a nice steaming plate of barbecue pork and rice. It does snack dishes like that very competently, but haven't been in a while now.

Elsewhere in CT, I use Dumpling's Legend, Joy King Lau (very traditional), people go on about the duck at Four seasons and there's a good place for shanghai dumplings on Lisle street whose name I can never remember (but you'll see them making them in the window so it's not too hard to find).

If you fancy pushing the boat out a bit, off CT a couple of modern options are Yautacha and Hakkasan - both a real treat of you're a serious dimsummie and are tired of the the indifferent dim sum served in most London places - but you'll pay for your pleasures.
