Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Stationers' Company's School, Mayfield Road, Hornsey
I recently attended a re-union for some of the oldies who attended Stationers many years back. There were quite a few old pictures going around and it occured to me that some HOL members might have some photos either of the school or with it in the background. The building was demolished so any bits and pieces could be of interest. Stories and recollections also welcome please.

One of the FPs was Colin Chapman, founder of the Lotus car company. I think the class photo is Stationers' but somebody said it couldn't be because it was an all-boys schppl.

Chapman also defrauded £40Million. From 1978 until his death, Chapman was involved with the American tycoon, John DeLorean, in his development of a stainless steel sports car, to be built in a factory funded by the British government. Approximately £10 million of British taxpayers money, equivalent to £40 million in 2010, went missing. Chapman died before the full deceit unravelled but, at the subsequent trial of Fred Bushell, the Lotus accountant, the judge insisted that, had Chapman himself been in the dock, he would have received a sentence "of at least 10 years".

Thank you James - As you can see I knew of Chapman but this story is new to me and I will do some research as it sounds an interesting tale.

I understand Colin Chapman's dad ran the pub by the railway and CC used to tinker with mechanical bits and pieces in the yard out the back. My friend Keith (Stat old boy) remembers taking his bike round to Colin's place whenever it went wrong - Pushbikes to Lotus - quite a jump!!

The Jewsons' site is the location of the first Lotus works.
Chapman's father was the license holder for the Railway Hotel ( now called Funky Brownz :-) )

Thank you for the picture and report page shown. As far as I am aware Stationers was always all boys but I am in contact with one of Colin Chapman's school friends and I will ask him if he recognises the location or children in your photo. Do you have the rest of the Chapman report by any chance?

Found better pic in " Colin Chapman - The man and his cars " Gerrard Crombac. In the school picture Chapman is supposed to be second from right, front row, aged 7 which would make it 1935.

Thanks again! As far as I can ascertain, the picture is from CC's primary school but I.ve yet to find out where that was located although I know he lived in Tottenham Lane. Just to make me feel really old, I've looked at the head's signature on the report and suspect it is Mr Nunnwho left just as I joined.

I don't suppose you know of where the school's old records might be now, do you? I found out a few months back that my grandfather probably was a pupil there in the 1920s. Is there any sort of old boys' society or similar that I could contact?

I am pleased to say that I can help. The Old Stationer's Association website is www.oldstationers.co.uk. If you contact the association and/or leave a message on the visitors page I am sure somebody will be able to answer your questions. There are some very old Old Stationers around so you might even find somebody who knew your grandfather - I wish you luck
