Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
We finally won the battle with Google Maps, Can it really be this easy with Apple?
Ater several years of battling with Google, I finally got Harringay on Google Maps. Then Apple went and did the dirty on us and replaced Google Maps on all their devices with their own (widely criticised) maps. And what did I (and others on Twitter) notice. No Harringay!
About ten days ago I found a way to submit a correction and either by coincidence or through a fast response, Harringay's now on the map. I wonder if they had an outpouring of dissent from around London about missing place names and just added the ward names across the city? I haven't checked. Would that fit? It would certainly explain why 'St Ann's' in there (actually about in the right place to correspond with what the Victoria County History describes as the late nineteenth century hamlet of St Ann's). BUT, following my experience with Google, i have to wonder if it'll stay there!
Either way, it's another fascinating example of how 21st Century technology is adding itself as yet another influence on what our neighbourhoods are called.

I submitted about half a dozen corrections to places around Wood Green a couple of weeks ago, but they've not changed yet. They were all businesses/landmarks though rather than area names, so maybe they're further down the queue if they really are making changes this quickly.

I suspect that if I had an affect at all, it was as one of a cacophonous crowd they couldn't ignore. I'm not at all convinced they'll be responding so quickly. Both Google and Apple have 'citizen editors' for their maps, but they seem to use it far less widely and successfully than organisations like Foursquare. (If you use Foursquare you'll notice that close to 100% of the Harringay data is accurate, for example).

Yes, it's a royal. Added to that, local high street businesses aren't good at using all the web has to offer by way of marketing.

SO...you have all upgraded to IOS6 eh?
I've been ignoring the calls to upgrade as i was told the maps app (which i use a lot) is awful.
is it really that bad?
...and if you have upgraded, given what you know now having used it, would you advise your IOS5 self to go for it or not?
