Length of Ladder Roads

I know that if you start at one end of the ladder and zig-zag up and down the roads, including the bits at each end on Wightman Road, Green Lanes (and Willoughby Road at the top of the Ladder), and including going along Turnpike Lane at the top and starting or finishing with Umfreville at the bottom, it's just shy of 10km (6.2miles) - I used this route as a training run when I was marathon training and house-hunting at the same time!  I've just had a quick look and the average road length is about 300m (but doesn't take into account the bits of Wightman and GL to get from one ladder road to the next) - the ones right at the top are shorter because of Duckett's Common, and there's a bulge on Wightman Road about a third of the way down from the top, making those roads longer.

And some are shorter going down than up - on a bike that is!

If you were really keen to know exactly how long each road is, check the council's winter service operational plan. There's a pdf of it somewhere on Hol.

Simples. Head to your Google Maps Labs settings and enable the Distance Measurement Tool.

Once you've done that you'll see a tiny ruler icon in the lower-left corner of the map frame—click it, and you can then click two points on the map to create a highlighter-style line between them. The left-hand panel will show your distance in feet/miles or meters/kilometers.

If you keep on clicking after the 2nd click, you can extend the distance to cover whatever route you want to measure.
