Extra black bins for everyone?
We had a real jobs worth from the council visit us yeterday who spoke to my husband as I was out. He told us that they had notice that our black bin was very full and did we know how to recycle. At the time our bin was 3/4 full with lid down so not sure how he came to this conclusion. Husband explained we have been recycling for years, have separate bins in kitchen and despite being family of 4 we generally fill half a black bin a week and our recycling bin is usually full. He asked was he knocking on everyone's door but apparently no, ours and a few neighbours were on his list today. Anyway he went on for ages apparently and then offered us another black bin. I think it is a good idea to go round and check people understand how to recycle and a few off our neighbours regularly have overflowing smelly bins but I'm not sure giving everyone an extra black bin is the answer to fortnightly deliveries. Also as someone who prides herself as a recycler and how tidy the front yard and bins are I was a bit put out by his accusations and fact he didn't seem to believe us, wish I had been home!
Anyway just wanted to share and see if anyone experienced anything similar?

Council staff can't win, can they? If they don't engage with residents they're clearly failing to do their jobs. If they do come and speak to you then they're a "real jobsworth"?

I think its the manner of the engagement that can make all the difference...anyway, they could at least also be going around to everyone whose bins _aren't_ overflowing to see if they could get by with fewer or smaller bins

we had a letter through the door saying the same thing.
Was surprised as the bin (used by four adults) was not that full - 3/4 maybe.
The recycling bin, on the other hand, was as full as it could be while keeping the lid closed. ( we had some new furniture etc so lots of cardboard that week)
So to ask us if we knew how to recycle seemed surprising but I just popped the letter straight in the recycling bin.
There are loads of people on our street who could do with his advice though.

Engaging is the last word I would use to describe this person. He was rude, didn't listen and spoke to my husband like he was an idiot. Great way to encourage more people to recycle. The manner of the engagement is certainly one of the points I am making. Jobs worth was the polite word my husband used to describe him.
The other point / question I am raising is - should the council be giving out more black bins as a resoloution to fortnightly collections?

To be less nuanced, Hugh. I don't see a complaint or even a constructive suggestion. I see a posting on a website.
