Hi All,
Sorry if this is a really dumb question but I wondered if someone could help me decode the recycling system of Haringey Council. Having just moved into the area from Hammersmith where everything is just dumped into a single bag, this is quite a step up.
I contacted the council when we moved in and received:
and was told to separate the waste into:
The Food waste and the non recyclable waste has been taken. But for some reason the dry recycling hasn't. We've got plastics and papers etc all together in the big green bin but loose (i.e. not in separate bags). I've looked through the bin again and can't see anything that shouldn't be there and the day for recycling collection seems to have passed. I've tried calling the council and emailing them but so far no response.
Any kind thoughts from the stalwarts on HOL would be most gratefully received!
Helene

The council doesn't start emptying the new recyling bins until the third week in June apparently. Use the old green boxes till then, if you have them.
This is what I thought and this is what is says on the leaflet, but one of the collectors told my neighbour that we need to use the new bins from now on. Confused? Yep.
Helene - they seem to deliberately miss something out each weekl. One week they don't collect the dry recycling, the next they leave the food waste. Drives me nuts.
Ha! Phew - at least it isn't just me! I'll keep pushing down the dry recycling until they collect it!

This is so that you can organise a sweepstake on your street for a bit of extra excitement!
Thanks so much Matt - that is really useful to know!
You should have a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one. Oops. Looking at the wrong webpage.
Welcome to Haringey. Forgive me for changing the spelling on your post. Here's the lite version explaining the spelling difference and here's the full fat.
Thanks Hugh! That is another area of mass confusion for me! It seems to vary so much. Very much enjoyed readying this and feel much more well informed!
Helene, bones can now be put into food waste - that's a very recent change. And despite Veolia telling me that they don't recycle plastic bags, the sticker on my new (and small-sized! Partial victory!) recycling wheelie bin clearly lists plastic bags as being accepted.
I must admit I am really loving the food caddy. Being able to recycling the bones would pretty much drop our non recyclable waste to nothing! Thanks for the update.
I have read the council leaflet and tried the website (has not been updated with new regime info) and am confused.
I have an old black wheelie bin, and a new wheelie bin with green lid, plus white sacks. That's all.
I did ask for an old green recycling box (three times) but never got one, so have been putting all rubbish in black wheelie bin. But now new regime is starting.
So, have I got this right. Newspapers, clean cans, etc go in bin with green lid for recycling. Anything that can't be recycled goes into black bin. Can food waste put in a white sack go in the green-lid bin? If not, where does it go?
