Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Great Northern Railway Tavern Hornsey High St - it's been refurbed.. And is ACE go visit!
I went for a pint at the GNRT last night - mainly cos it was the nearest pub to Hornsey rail station - and it was the most wonderful pub!!!
I've been intrigued for a while due to lovely building and long, rail-related name but wasn't expecting much as it has had a reputation for being an 'old man pub' (no direct offence to old men intended).
It was just stunning and the most wicked pub. There was a fire burning (who'd have thought that would be a welcome sight in MAY, but hey-ho), games, they've got a garden on the go which will be furnished for use when we get a summertime, good choice of lager and none of the nasty crap Fosters/carslberg etc, and a simple menu that looks worth a go though I'll have to eat there another time. They do free gigs, there's wi-fi and the staff were friendly.
When I aske dthe barman explained that the building was refurbed a year ago but that they've only bee running it for the last 2 months. So maybe this is common knowledge but I wanted to make sure becuase the good people of Harringay should be supporting this venture.
Needless to say the building has been beautifually restored, has a glass ceiling to rival the Salisbury, lickable wooden floors and just the right amount of furniture in there to seat lots of people but not overcrowd.
As this weekend is set to be a wash-out, why not go check it out it deserves your custom!

They are on twitter but I can no longer see their tweets in my twitter stream. I think I got blocked for suggesting that slagging off rival eateries in the area was not the best marketing strategy. I hope I'm wrong though, I was looking forward to trying a new family friendly pub that serves decent food.

In which case you have not been blocked from anything, I suggested, quite rightly that if you did not like our tweets then you should not be following us on twitter. Once I suggested this you unfollowed us.... I know this because I have an 'unfollower app'. This is why you no longer see us in your stream. I have also NEVER "slagged off" any local business. I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. Thanks

Euros begin this Friday..... I have installed a projector and screen. For the duration of the championships, Burger and a Beer (or wine if you prefer) meal deal for a Tenner. Couldn't ask for more!

An End to the silliness.
I feel that Tony and Matt have come in and are doing sterling efforts.
I personally have had a sneak preview at the new menu and it is simply stunning, to do the items they are at the cost they are charging beggers belief.
The Ales are good the beer well kept and the food to die for what more could we ask for.
The staff are friendly the pub looks good, the music is at a good level and of good class so lets stop the negatives and childish comments and back a local business that has a chef from Padstow with amazing qualities a damn good chance

Thanks Tony for these useful updates about the pub.
When GNRT first reopened after the refit me and my other half went down a couple of times, loved the sensitive refurb, nice food too.
But then the pub seemed to be shut for a period, then reopened with a sign on the door saying 'no credit cards'. This put us off - we thought the business must be going under.
So we went back to the Three Compasses and haven't returned to GNRT since.
Now I have heard what you're doing we will come back.
BTW I find the thought of a choir upstairs at the Gate singing away whilst a load of skanky-looking blokes watch football on the 50 gazillion TV screens downstairs really funny.
The Gate ... there's a pub that's gone downhill in the last 5 years! Maybe the choir will move it back upmarket!

Very odd - I decided to wander along and have a look for myself and arrived at 1.50 pm to find it dark and closed. No indication on the outside of opening hours.
Don't pubs open at lunchtime any more ? Can anyone ( or Tony ) post the GNRT opening hours ?

Apologies John. I normally have a printed sheet of opening hours on both doors but they have just changed so need to do fresh ones. We are an evening pub only for the time being. This area is dead during he days, it would be a huge waste of time and money opening up.
