Bin raider - the photo!
Spotted this charming individual this morning at around 8:30 am, going through the bins of the house opposite mine. Took his sweet time about it too. Did call the SNT to let them know.
Was being sensible for once and did not approach him to tell him to f' off.... Has anyone else seen this one?

We have them here too, going through the recycle bins most days. I've not been that bothered (apart from the creepy surprise of looking up to see a stranger just outside my window) but yesterday my veg box was robbed from my doorstep, the first time in years that this has happened. Coincidence or not, I've stuck notices on my bins saying: 'Scrap metal collectors - stop trespassing here. If we have scrap metal we will put it outside the gate.'
Hope that they read English, and from now on I will go out and chase them off.
No real solution. It's not quite illegal? Is anyone allowed into your front yard eg leaflet deliverers as well as regular posties?

About a month ago I found a woman going through my bins as I was leaving the flat (Lausanne Road). I told her gently that she shouldn't really go through people's bins but she didn't appear to understand me. She asked me for any clothes or scrap. I felt dreadful - I mean she was going through bins! Then a bit later I saw her with a group of women at the corner of Frobisher and Willoughby being bossed about by some ring leader guy - I guess telling them to get stuff out of the bins. So it seems it was an organised affair. Not very nice for anyone really.

I just don't want to come home and find that on my doorstep. It's quite intimidating if you're on your own, finding some bloke going through what is still your stuff.

Mixed feelings about all this. I don't have to go through bins to find pennies worth of scrap, for a living. For this I am grateful [understatement]. But there is the at least unsubstantiated suggestion that this is organised and perhaps associated with more mainline theft.
I met one van pair this week - just after sticking F-off notices on my bins. I had put a pile of scrap metal bits by the gate, so when they asked for it I said, yes, I put these out for you - I will keep any scrap metal there, so don't come into my garden again. They understood, but I don't know how territories are divided.
BTW I thought this was a Roma/Traveller thing but these guys were Polish.

I spoke to a woman going through a neighbour's bin. She didn't seem to understand me, but touched the very thin jumper she had on. So I went home and Zena quickly found a fleece jacket she rarely wears. I took it back to the woman who put it on, said 'Thank-you' and walked away.
Were we wrong? I don't care. It was a bitterly cold day.

@neiltingley, thanks for a sensible response.
I don't think the majority of these people are just looking for food or clothing, they've got much more sinister motives. And I do not want them on my property at all.
The individual in the photo seemed drugged, slow movements, not all there, and I really do not want to come home and find that on my propety. I put my safety before theirs, funnily enough.
