Riots caused by insufficiency of violence, MP says
David Lammy MP has a new idea about the causes of the riots. Not enough smacking. Of course, how could we have missed this in all the analysis?
Actually much as I disagree with Lammy, I know how he got here. I heard many people post-riots saying, I can't discipline my children because Your Lot has made it illegal. They don't seem to have understood the difference between discipline and assault.

I'd like to hope, Pam, that people will watch, as far as possible, with open minds and without preconceptions.
One of the puzzling and sad features of the response to the riots was the number of people who, within a few days of the riots ending, seemed to form fixed ideas about the causes and action needed. And they haven't budged since.
Yesterday I spoke to our friend Nigel Mellor - the educational psychologist mentioned earlier in this thread. Nigel mentioned Galileo and how his University colleagues refused to look through his telescope. Including his friend Cesare Cremonini who rejected the idea that there were mountains on the moon.
In true scientific fashion Cesare said: "I do not wish to approve of claims about which I do not have any knowledge, and about things which I have not seen". Fair enough. But then he added:
". . . to observe through those glasses gives me a headache. Enough! I do not want to hear anything more about this."

Watched tonights doc about the 'rioting/robbing' youths. It moved me like nothing i've so far seen on this subject. The individuals that took part were very brave to be so honest in their answers to all of the questions put to them.

Yes, I thought it was very honest - sometimes shockingly so. And it didn't search for any easy answers. Many of the people on it were in fact young adults over 18, so their parents could not stop them going out or doing what they wanted.

I didn't hear the word Moral at all - and that's what it comes down to. And I may be wrong but I didn't hear anyone saying they did wrong either - just regretted getting caught.
I'm glad my kids are all grown up now. The pull of the crowd is so strong, especially when it's your 'protection'.

Do you think there are any bankers who wish they hadn't done it? Rather than just regretting they were caught?
