cat flaps
Can anyone give advice on microchip cat flaps? We have had our kittens micro-chipped and will be letting them out soon but haven't sorted the cat flap yet. We were thinking of a microchip flap but they are pretty expensive. Are they worth it? Does anyone have a recommendation on a brand?
Any advice greatly appreciated!

We have a Pet Porte flap. Fantastic in terms of letting our cats and only our cats in. However, we bought it on the basis that it had a setting to lock our cats in at night, which didn't work so well. After giving up on that setting, all good - especially in keeping our neighbourhood bully out.

Yes definitely get one, I asked the same question on here when we adopted our cat.
It took her a while to get used to it, especially coming in because she has to stick her head in a little tunnel for the chip reader to release the catch. But after a few weeks she zoomed in and out. We've never had any other cat visitors.
We went for Sure Flap - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003EGIM3O because it works on batteries, and because of the recommendations on here and reviews on amazon.

Thanks - that's great. Can I ask, does the SureFlap allow you to keep them in at night? I'd like to keep them in at night, at least at the beginning.

Yes you just turn a little catch which locks it.
I don't let our cat out at night, we adopted her from the RSPCA and they told me to keep her in.

Yes yes yes! Worth every penny - my home was being raided daily by the '3 Legged Cat of Doom' - I kid you not - it was a beast of mythical proportions in spite of (probably because of) its 3 legs. Pissing everywhere, harassing my cats to the point where I had to take mine to the vet with a deep cut on his tail, and eating all the available cat food. 6 months on and it still tries to get in . . . but now it can't and my cats hiss at it from the safety of the kitchen. For London cat owners an absolute necessity I think.

The SureFlap recommended by JulieB is the one we have. Works well for our two cats and I believe we could programme in 22 more should the need arise ;-)
It's never failed to let kitties in before, but as stated in other posts, you have to manually turn a dial to keep the cat in at night. That said, of an evening you can set it to "in" only, allowing your cat to return home but not turn around and leave for a night out after dinner.
One other apparent feature is that it seems to prevent our cats bringing dead things back. They are both boys and have been known to chase foxes and even kill rats (if they dare show their faces) - I'm sure they'd love to bring back a present, but I think they need to put their head so far into the flap for the chip reader to work, that it stops them holding dead prey in their mouths as they enter. Having made such a claim, the house will be littered with dead mice, birds and rats when I get home ;)
We like ours very much and view it as well worth the expense - highly recommended!

We have seven cats and use 'SureFlap' which has proved very useful in keeping out stray cats. However one of our cats wont use it unless you open it for him. They have to use their head rather than paw to open it, but it may also be because we had to install it through glass rather than wood so it has a longer tunnel than normal. I would recommend it though as the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. 6 out of 7 cats prefer it.

now use magnetic cat flap- I no longer have probs with unwanted cats as none of the neighbours cats have one and the stray cats def dont- and its soooooo much cheaper than magnetic cat flap and my cats werent bothered by wearing a magnetic after a few hours

Just wondering is the cat that needs it opening for him small cat? My small cat couldn't use the cat flap until I made him a little step. When he was high enough he was able to open it for himself.

They are 6 month old kittens - not quite fully grown. Actually, having read all the great comments about SureFlap I've now ordered one - thanks for all the brilliant advice - it's good to know I can set it so that they can come back in but not get back out!
We now have to get a flap for the inner door which has a panel down the middle of it. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. The space for a cat flap is just over 21cm in width. Is that enough space?
