I've been looking on line for Russian language lessons ( beginner level ) but they all seem pretty expensive ( £ 250 a term ) which is going to bump up the cost of my holiday more than a bit. Anybody know of any cheap / subsidised Russian lessons ? Anybody know of someone who could help in exchange for English lessons ?

Did you look at City Lit? I have not used them but friends are (for various languages including Russian) and recommend.
It is £137 a term, various concessions available.

Gumtree has a language swap section where people offer tuition in their language in return for help with English.
Thanks Elle. Only current City Lit course is £ 176 / term with no concessions. But I may go that way is there's nothing cheaper. Thanks again.
I'm not at home very much, but I could give you some introductory lessons if you like. You don't happen to play the piano, do you? We could do a labour exchange...? Otherwise, if you're interested I could probably teach you enough o get by on your hols for a small fee
Thanks Chris
That sounds fine except I can't offer piano so money will have to do.
Give me a couple of weeks to get festivities over and to get my head round the alphabet and I'll be in touch.
No worries John. As things stand I am likely to be around for most of the first two weeks of January then disappearing for a couple of weeks
Just so you have an idea what to expect I have not used my Russian since I graduated 20-odd years ago, so I will be v. ring rusty and some of my phraseology might sound a bit odd these days... but it should be good enough to get you directions to the Hermitage... if it still exists!
