Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Little Jewels Nursery.
What do people think of it?
Wasn't impressed with the Ofsted report - Only Satisfactory and they flat out failed Safeguarding which is worrying. Just wondered if people had their kids there and had found it a good place?

There was a discussion here about Little Jewels earlier this year. Not sure how to link to it I'm afraid. From Harringay Online contributors Little Jewels received an "Outstanding" and "Really Great" and lots of other praise. My son went there for two years and loved it. He still talks about it several years later.

I don't know about Little Jewels but there were problems with Ofsted reporting if it was done about this time last year. They brought in new rules about safety documentation but didn't explain it very well - something like all the checks had to be recorded on one document. My children's nursery had had all the safety checks but hadn't added 2 new staff to this form, so the Ofsted was listed as satisfactory - when in fact their safety record is excellent. Maybe this is what happened at Little Jewels too?

Hi there, we have just taken our daughter out of Little Jewels. She is back at her childminder now. We wasn't impressed with the offsted (and the latest one is 2011) either but thought that lots of people seems to have good opinions about them. So we register her in for this month and was really disappointed with her first week... Not enough carer (experienced one) and focused activity. That's just my opinion but she is better off at her childminder. More expensive but worth it.

Our child had a great time there and still pops in from time to time to say hello to everyone.
I like that that all the children of different ages are mixed up together instead of separated in to age categories.
they can also pick up or drop off if your child starts going to South Harringay Nursery on the mornings or afternoon.

I looked at little jewels about a year ago as was considering other options for my daughter's care. Decided against it as when we walked in the staff were just sitting in the corner and not interacting at all with the children, also the fact it is all one big room meant it didn't feel particularly cosy or warm. But saying that it was only a 15 minute opinion, and I have heard good things in the past from others.

Our son has been there for over a year and although he found the transition from childminder to nursery a bit hard - something which I think is pretty normal, coupled with the fact we had also just moved house at the same time - he is now happy there and I would certainly recommend this nursery. I found the most recent Ofsted report which Lisa and MzMoore refer to quite unfair and really rather surprising and I am ignoring it to be honest.
My personal knowledge of the excellent staff and the obviously happy children matter far more. In all these months I have never had the experience you had Katy, even though I drop my son and pick him up often at unusual hours so would probably notice anything like that, and on the opposite I think the staff are really involved with the children. It may well be they were having a quick meeting? Just a thought.
I think Ofsted reports are a useful tool of course but not to be taken so literally. After all it's one person ticking boxes. I'll have a closer look at it when I have time to try to figure out how it could be so bad given most of us parents are quite happy with the place.

Agree that ofsted reports, whilst useful, need to be looked at in context.

She's at Eagle Nursery on the corner of Allison Road and Green Lanes. I really like it, initially I had a few issues (which was why I was looking at Little Jewels) but since they got a new manager, and the owner became more involved in the day to day running it has come on leaps and bounds and I can't recommend it highly enough. I would definitely ask them, they should be open about it. I'm sure it's probably the same as our nursery (Woodlands) and it a glitch in the system.
I'm also sure if there was a serious issue with safeguarding they wouldn't be allowed to operate.

Our boy went there when he was three and we really liked it. We found the staff to be very caring and responsible. True, some of the staff had more training than others but the key workers were great. I haven't seen the Ofsted report but have a chat with the manager Vlora, I'm sure she could answer any concerns.
Whilst it can't compete with somewhere like Woodlands Park in terms of resources, the curriculum was more focused than at his childminders and it did give our boy the experience of mixing with a larger group of kids than he was used to, which was an important preparatory step for school (which he's just started).
As others have said, Ofsted reports can be useful but can also be a bit misleading without knowing the context. I remember Woodlands Park - which most think is a great children's centre - getting a 4 (inadequate) rating in 2009, I believe for safeguarding reasons (which they've since corrected and were reassessed last year as 'outstanding'.)

Our two boys were there, though that was between 10 and 4 years ago. Vlora was there when our youngest was there. I'm not sure if Molly's still there. I wasn't impressed with the environment but was completely bowled over by how good the staff were with the children. It's not perfect but I did feel the boys were well cared for, with affection and I think the staff gave them really good preparation for school in the last few weeks.
