Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Train workers' union worries on passenger safety over plans to slash London station staff

Mainline railway stations across London and the South-East will be left without staff as a result of government cuts, the TSSA union claimed yesterday.

A total of 265 stations in London and the South-East will be affected, the Transport Salaried Staffs Association said. They include Acton, Brixton, Chiswick, East Dulwich, Harringay Green Lanes and Tooting.

The Government is considering proposals in the report by businessman Sir Roy McNulty, which recommends cuts of £1 billion across the national network.

It includes a "hit list" of 675 ticket offices to be closed nationwide. As there are no platform staff at these stations, they will be left unmanned. Up to 1,000 ticket office jobs could go.

The TSSA union, which represents ticket office staff, has collated from the "small print" of the report all the stations affected in the South-East.

Leader Gerry Doherty said: "Stations will be left unsafe purely to save money - passengers, particularly women, will fear arriving at stations in the dark with nobody to turn to if they need help."

He said that passengers were facing a "double whammy" of reduced safety and higher fares - set to increase by 25 per cent over the next three years.

Mr Doherty accused Transport Secretary Philip Hammond - who welcomed the report when it was published in May - of being on a "political suicide mission" because 40 per cent of the hit-list stations are in Tory heartlands.

Commending the report to the Commons, Mr Hammond said: "Sir Roy estimates that UK rail costs are 20-30 per cent higher than they should be and that potential savings amounting to between £740 million and £1.05 billion a year could be found by 2018/19 without any reductions in services."

Local(ish) stations or terminals from here which are affected include:

  • Harringay Green Lanes
  • Crouch Hill
  • Bowes Park
  • Bruce Grove
  • South Tottenham
  • Drayton Park
  • Stamford Hill
  • Moorgate

Hasn't this already happened? I only ever see staff at South Tottenham station in the rush hours.

Oyster may be handy but this is the side-effect.

My immediate reaction too. Although I did see a chap at Hgy GL last week.
The bloke at Harringay Green Lanes is usually there during working hours I think - he usually stays in the office/shack thing on the Eastbound side.  The same guy has been there for years (well, since I moved here anyway), and has helped me out a few times when the ticketing machine has been on the blink and eaten my money / not issued tickets etc.
AFAIK, even if the booking office were to close down at Harringay GL, the station will still be manned whenever trains are running--- it is a contract requirement for Overground services.
I can see a strike coming !!!!!
Please leave it until next July , how about the 25th.
As a daily user of HGL station I can say that there are regular staff there that are always very polite and helpful! I deffo see them each day and think that since the staff were introduced the station is a lot better.
