Six policemen take on '50 hooded youths'
A police officer has described how he and five colleagues, armed only with two shields, defended a retail park from a gang of up to 50 hooded youths.
PC Gordon Murphy, 30, said despite their lack of numbers, officers charged at the mob who were trying to loot the stores in Catford, south-east London.
He said: "We decided, as they ran at us, to rush back at them, with only six officers running back at 40.
"The mad thing is, they all ran back so we didn't even have to make contact."

Meanwhile, we see a unique take on the blurring of the class divide in Britain, with posh kids allegedly caught up in the looting spree.
The 19–year–old is a high–flying pupil who attended St Olave's Grammar School – the fourth best performing state school in the country.
She is now reading English and Italian at the University of Exeter.
However, Miss Johnson now stands accused, along with two others, in connection with the alleged theft of £5,000 of goods from the Stonelake Retail Park in Charlton, south London.
The goods were allegedly found in a car being driven by Miss Johnson.

But, Matt, St Olave's School motto is "Olaf to right the wrong!", so Miss Johnson (who completed her Sixth Form studies there last year) was simply filled with the Olavian spirit in liberating (not nicking) a mere £5,000 worth of goods for delivery to a more deserving owner. I am sure she followed proper etiquette as to invoices and receipts.
Of course Mr Aydin Onac (umlaut over the O, cedilla under the c), until recently Head of Fortismere, is now Headmaster of St Olave's. I don't think he can take credit for this Olavian's courageous and altruistic deed in righting the wrong as he only took over as Head some months after she graduated.

Foolish Laura Johnson. Rather than a possible prison sentence if found guilty, I'd be prepared to put her across my knee and give her a good spanking, but my motives might be suspect.
Better left to the police and the courts to implement the law without fear or favour.
Her and her 'mates' actions show that greedy materialism affects a wide social spectrum. Her background is perhaps an illustration that intelligence and character are different things.

The riots/looting were carried out by a really vast spectrum of people - a variety of ages, both male and female, many ethnicities and, presumably, diverse backgrounds. The overwhelming majority of those charged however have been male. 95% of those charged so far are male. Statistics for those charged are on bbc.co.uk if you want to check.
Ms Johnson is indeed foolish - and atypical.
