@ William Booth: It's exactly this kind of thinking that's created this problem. Take away the individual's resposnibility for own actions, create a blame culture. "it's not my fault, innit, I grew up in a bad area (instert whatever excuse you want here), so I can't be held responsible" Bollocks!

Anette, note well the ancient Irish tackling skills and uniform. Twelve centuries ago we put in some useful practice on the Viking hoodies. No son of Sigurd was safe from our TLC. We haven't forgotten.

Alternatively, as David Starkey put it on Newsnight last night, "the whites have become black". Good god. Between that sort of ridiculous and inflammatory comment (I think the extent of Starkey's knowledge of young dispossessed people must be his few days on Jamie's Dream School) and the organising of ethnically-centred vigilante groups, we must be extremely careful that a major set of ethnic tensions don't come out of these sad events. Our area has been pretty well-integrated - I heard Tottenham is the most diverse constituency in Europe in terms of languages spoken, for example - and it would be a disaster if that diversity was blamed.
