I've been looking closely for any posts expressing sympathy for crazy acts of greed-crazy rioters. I haven't found any. So what are the reasons for the rioting? Perhaps Tindara came closest to some of those reasons.

All this is predictably depressing. This riot has put back an already impoverished area twenty years. Many buildings, some I have known since my childhood, have been completely destroyed. The High Road could be shut for several days, meaning many people will be unable to travel to and from the area. Of course there is always the awful prospect of further disturbances this evening....

This has already re-enforced perception that Tottenham is a no-go area for locals and visitors. But it isn't.....

Thankfully the majority of people in this discussion does not make excuses for common criminals destryoying a community. There's hope after all.

To use one of your phrases Annette ..'you are twisting'..  Nobody here has been making excuses.. They are trying understand why it happened.

As for them being 'common' criminals - What makes you so expert in Judging..? There might even been some from the upper classes amongst them - who knows..? certainly not you..!

Your extremely robust views won't help at all - do you want the status quo to continue? - something is obviously wrong in society.

@Stephen: "something is obviously wrong in society" - we agree on something!!!

and to clarify, a common criminal is any criminal. They're all common, no matter what their background.

here's my pics of Tottenham Hale.

Re motivation for rioting. There's a big unmentionable. It's FUN. Those boys had big grins on, and lots of back-slapping, great shot bruv. A bit like what's left out of the anti-drugs propaganda - drugs feel nice, at least to start with, otherwise why do people start? But They never say that. Rioting is exciting. Looting must be a massive adrenalin charge, a bit like burgling but with guaranteed newer booty.

As mentioned elsewhere, the top looters at Tottnm Hale were drivers, mostly of recent reg cars. Is that having nothing?

Unfortunately, as mentioned elsewhere, the top (or only) shooters at Tottnm Hale seem to have been the forces of law & order, according to early forensic evidence.

Now where have I encountered that before in my short lifetime?

Sky News: Dead Man's Family Condemn Tottenham Riot

Interview with Mark Duggan's brother Shaun. Says he doesn't believe Mark would have been carrying a gun. The family do need answers from the police. They do not want these riots to be linked to Mark's name and want local people to stay calm

In the same Sky News article they report;

The Met Police opened their Gold Command Control centre in south London - normally only used for major incidents, such as the Royal wedding and the student protests.

Sky home affairs correspondent Mark White said: "This is a significant move for the police.

"This control centre is only ever activated for major public order events."

But THEY LOST CONTROL. How many times do I need to say that?  They were unable to stop two major shopping centres being plundered. So if that's their Gold Top Command process, I'm terrified.

By coincidence, as I turned into my street at about 4 am, with camera tucked inside my coat, I was harassed by, I think, a neighbour, who wanted me to join him for unspecified pleasures. I had to shout at him to get him to back off, and was very glad to get inside, hoping he had not noted my door number. What good would a 999 call have been then?

Here's a picture from Liz of the building that burned down:

Thanks for this. Was trying to remember what it looked like. Can see it had just been spruced up as well. Unfortunately it looks so damaged from the fire that it will have to be knocked down, so it'll be no more.

Once the rioters/looters have been caught they should be put on Community Payback service to help bring the High Rd back to some level of repair, where that is possible, such as painting and decorating etc.

Dream on, Matt. They'll get a slapped wrist.  What will the poor people who lost their homes and businesses get? These idiots should be made to work for them specifically. To see what damage they have done. But that'll never happen in a million years, unfortunately.
