Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am happy to report that as of this this Monday a brand new Neapolitan & Italian restaurant has opened on Green Lanes - in front of Finsbury Park, just after Homebase, in the place where the (short lived) Vegetarian cafe/restaurant was a few months ago.

I've just tried it for lunch today with husband and toddler and it was very nice. The young owners are very friendly and keen on giving locals genuine Italian food.

I will write a longer review on the restaurant section soon but for the moment I just thought it would be nice to give some good news here - that there is now more variety than before on Green Lanes. We should probably make sure we support them - I think they have a chance of doing well as they offer something very different from anything else around here but of course locals need to go and eat there!

I want one of those pastries in the film...
There now. Just about to tuck in. Taste Harringay and die.

We dropped in for a bite to eat last night and were really impressed! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and we wound up having a very laid-back Monday evening sipping wine (we brought our own) and watching the world of Green Lanes go by. And, of course, eating lots of their very tasty food!

As a vegetarian I am always a little bit put off by short menus, but with the evening's special included (a really decent risotto with beans) there was plenty for my partner and I to choose from. We particularly loved the mozzarella, which was on the house last night and is imported every Monday so was very fresh! Delicious stuff, and we left feeling full and happy. Particularly after a generous portion of their just-made tiramisu...yum!

This is the first time I've had a 'local' meal since moving to the area so I really hope this one will stick around!

Sounds yummy! I am a veggie too and good to know that they have something to offer us. Mozzarella on Mondays... a must!

Italian food is generally good for veggies as there is lots of choice. The only general word of warning - not about this restaurant really but more for when you go to Italy - is that sometimes some small bits of meat or fish may be used while cooking and a bit "hidden" (e.g. anchovies or some types of animal fat used for "soffritto" - the initial stir fry).

However I am not saying this is the case at I Borboni - and also as the food here is all freshly prepared and they are of course well aware of the need to cater for vegetarians, I am sure that it will be no problem for the chefs to adjust recipes to your needs (if relevant...), if you discuss ingredients them in advance...

I'd also add that mozzarella isn't always vegetarian. In fact, buffalo mozzarella never is - not sure if this is what they use at I Borboni. I know not all vegetarians are strict about cheese but if you are, then it's worth checking.

That's true about traditional buffalo mozzarella, but there are some newer varieties that are suitable for strict vegetarians. I've actually told the owners of I Borboni a few days ago they should check out produce at Stoke Newington farmer's market because there is a stall selling pretty good buffalo mozzarella produced in the UK and which (I just checked the website of the producers now) happens to be suitable for veggies - I hadn't quite thought of that issue at that point, not being vegetarian myself. So they could potentially get some of that too. But it's up to them....

In any case, they've only just opened a few days ago! I think feedback is good, but for the moment the I think the priority for a small business like that is to ensure survival - then perhaps they may consider adding organic/vegetarian/vegan or whatever else, etc options to the menu, if there is sufficient demand from customers....!

A reminder, I'm sure Salvio, Nuncio & Marcello would really appreciate any nice words you can copy and paste on to their Qype page.
Done!
Yaay - let's keep these boys in business!
Going there for lunch today with a fellow Italian foodie aficionado so I'll let you know our verdicts!

Hi Guys,

I've been there twice for dinner and endless times just for a coffee break. It's a lovely place, so out of the sad ordinary shops of Green Lanes! I used to go to Kensington or to the West End for dinner, but now I found this wonderful place so near home and I think I won't move so far again for a good pasta!

The first time I tried the buffalo mozzarella and it was great, the second time i had salsiccia and Frisiarelli (some kind of napolitan broccoli) and it was mouth watering. I ate it three times!

I recommend this place to everybody, it's perfect for a lovely dinner with your wife or just for a quick coffee break. The owners are very friendly and you can breath this true italian air in the shop.

See you there!
