Will you guys please read the first section of this. Haringey = borough. Harringay = neighbourhood. :o)

No doubt this is going to incite some sort of debate...

But if Haringey is the Borough and Harringay the neighbourhood then surely Railway Fields is in both and so it doesn't matter which spelling is used? Other than for the neighbourhood pride of saying its in Harringay?!

Also, as a member of Friends of Railway Fields, we want to appeal to as many people as possible, so surely we again are better to appeal to a whole borough and say Haringey rather than just Harringay!

So we're to name things by the extent to which they appeal to the whole borough? By this logic, Wood Green High Street becomes Haringey High Street so more people shop there; Bruce Castle Museum changes to Haringey Museum so more people visit and so on?

What on earth is the resistance to using the correct name.  Did they really consciously choose the incorrect spelling as a marketing ploy or was it an understandable mistake?

Do they really want every posting of theirs on here dogged with discussion of their misspelling?

PS: FoRF will need to negotiate the change of spelling of the railway station to their version with Network Rail, I guess. ;o)

And, by the way Abster, what's wrong with neighbourhood pride? Isn't the absence of it a cause of problems rather than a solution?

As someone originally from the Isle of Wight (or should I say Isle of White) which is apparently part of Portsmouth, a Channel Island and you need your passport to get there! I fully understand how annoying it is when people say such ridiculous things about where you live! (It's Wight, and no to all of the above!) Although don't see the Haringey Harringay thing as being quite as ridiculous as being told you actually live in the Channel Islands! 

 

When I first came to London I was given directions to Railway Fields I was told it was in Haringey, which is how I have always known it since. Which I have never questioned as the address is also Haringey! And so therefore this is my natural way of typing it (and my spell checkers also, it rejects the use of Harringay!)

 

Hugh when writing things on this website I will do my best to call it Harringay! 

 

However as we are a new group we do want to appeal to the whole Borough, we would love it if someone from the Tottenham end of Haringey came to visit us!

Great, glad you will do your best to spell it correctly, Ebbstar. We'll do our best to carry on promoting your events. Any particular reason for your reluctance to use the correct form beyond this website?

Do you think perhaps that you were just given a bum steer to begin with that was just plain wrong? I can't think of any part of London that uses the borough name as part of its address. Can you?

People will come from Tottenham and from Crouch end, but not because you use the borough's name or misspell the station name.

You could appeal to an even wider group by just saying it's in London :)

Calling it Harringay is useful because it tells people where it is ie, not Tottenham or Highgate.
