Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Have fun whilst learning about wine from an local based wine writer and educator.

Hugo is pleased to be offering the chance to win a free six week wine appreciation course at Pemberton Road on Tuesday evenings. If you would like to be included in the free prize draw to win a free course please send an email to hugh@harringayonline.com with the title Free Wine Appreciation Course Draw. The winner will be drawn on Friday 5th March and the course will be held from Tuesday 15th March – Tuesday 5th May, taking a two week break for Easter (not running on April 12th or 19th).

No prior knowledge is assumed; all that is needed to bring to the table is a love of red and white wine and a desire to learn more with an open mind.

The course is run by Hugo Read and costs £150 for the six sessions (except for the prize draw winner!).  It  is restricted to 12 people to ensure it stays intimate and fun as well as educational.

Each session looks at wines from a classic French region and compares them against examples made from the same grape varieties but from around the world.

The sessions break down as follows:

  1. White Varieties from Burgundy and the Central Vineyards
    Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc
  2. Red Varieties from Burgundy and Beaujolais
    Gamay and Pinot Noir
  3. White Varieties from Bordeaux and the Loire Valley
Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Muscadelle
  4. Red Varieties from Bordeaux and the Loire Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec
  5. White Varieties from Alsace
    Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer
  6. Red Varieties  from the Rhône Valley
    Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre …

As well as assessing a flight of wines, each session will also give an understanding of:

  • The fundamental characteristics of wine; acidity, alcohol, sweetness and tannin.
  • The world of wine; where the wine regions of France are located, the other major wine regions of the world, which climates suit which varieties, …
  • The basic characteristics of the grape varieties studied and how they change according to vineyard location and winemaking techniques

First half-dozen draw entries received.

Just had a quick look at Hugo's blog and noticed some feedback from his first course (web page can be slow to load) which appears recently to have completed.

Thanks for that Hugh.  Yes, the previous course went really well and I got some great feedback.  I think everyone found it both fun as well as informative.  I try to get the balance of being genuinely educational, covering quite a lot of ground, but also keeping the snobbery and fear away and making it very 'round table'.

I also focus on wines that people will be able to readily buy afterwards (not from me, but the high street); from the first course several of the people have subsequently gone out and bought quite a few of the wines we featured.  So hopefully as well as being educational it can help improve people's drinking habits!

Hugo.

P.S. If you and anyone else enjoys the blog (Hugo's Reserve, at www.hugoread.com) then please pass on the word.  I'm trying to build my traffic!

Last day to enter the draw is today!!
