Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Cold snap means, Sally (77 and disabled) will run out of food in two days
Sally is 77 and disabled. She can't get out to the supermarket in this cold weather and doesn't have the equipment or the tech savvy to order food online. She's reluctant to ask her neighbours for help. She only has enough food to last her two more days.
This short sound clip taken from a talk-in radio station this week let's us hear Sally's concerns.
Sally doesn't live in Harringay, but what if she did? What would we do? How could we help?

I have no doubt there are people like Sally in Harringay and its environs.
At Age Concern Haringey we are discussing what to do about emergency shopping needs of isolated older people.
I am willing to go out to help people myself and a few other HoL members have come forward with offers of help. Thanks to them in advance. But that means we need to know WHO the isolated and at risk people are, and WHERE they live. This links up with the project I am involved with and would appeal again to anyone who thinks they could be willing to offer a short bit of time especially in this terrible weather. You can always get in touch with me, via HoL if you think there is someone close by to you who is at risk of running out of food.
For those of you who do keep an eye out for a neighbour, can I suggest flasks of hot tea, and hot soup help out on these chilly days.
PLEASE do think about what you can do even if only contacting me with some information.

We can make this problem simpler. A regular delivery of a regular delivery is not beyond the capacity of our many grocery delivery companies for people willing to accept such deliveries at any time of the day AND have the amount taken from their bank accounts. Sure, it will be a big job to go and interview everyone the first time about what they want and find someone who is motivated to do the bargaining with the supermarkets to make sure the delivery is free but apart from that... is the problem not simpler now?

I've already said that I don't speak Greek and someone else has already pointed out a local politician that does.

I will consider the grocery delivery option John and will ask my colleagues here at Age Concern of their experience of this. I am on the hunt for a greek speaking volunteer or two- they are clearly needed not just in your street but elsewhere.

Many thanks for that offer John. Very much appreciated.
An informed guess will tell me that those who might need shopping done are not online but I did meet one lady just before Xmas who is. She lives in Hermitage Rd tho which is not your neck of the woods. We are trying to send her a volunteer befriender thru Age Concern. Once I have news from HoL members who have stepped forward about their streets, there could be people to sort out for sure. I will keep you posted and get back to you with any emergency requests that come through Age Concern.
